I'm not positive if there is a thread on this because i didn't have time to search since i'm studying for a final but yesterday afternoon i cracked the glass on my 3gs from a more minor fall than what its usually dropped from if it falls out of my hand. Needless to say, after a whole day i lost the ability to get 3g in places i know i always get 3g in. This isnt the first time i've noticed this though. My brother had a 3g and he cracked the glass on two separate iPhones (yeah he doesnt have good luck) but the exact same thing happened to him. All three phones have cracks on the glass in different spots, but they all lost the ability to detect 3g signal. I think it is, but is there a distinct possibility that cracked glass causes the device to lose the ability to find 3g? I know the crack isnt bad but i uploaded a picture for you to see, as you can tell its the top right hand corner of the glass. I was so mad when it happened because usually the phone is perfectly fine, but the one day i dont worry it had to happen.

I doubt that the lack of 3G reception is directly related to the broken glass. It's probably just that some kind of jar that is hard enough to break the glass is also hard enough to break the 3G antenna or where it is connected or something. Maybe that just happens to be a delicate part of the phone. BTW, if you're using the phone still be careful - I've read of people using their phone with cracked screens and getting cut on their faces.

Good thing you have a backup white iPhone 3G.

actually that's my friends 3gs that i was taking a picture of the crack to send to my brother since he broke two. I knew he'd laugh at seeing the fact i finally did it. My 3gs is white, and my back up iPhone is a black 3g. I'm going to try to replace the glass myself though, very handy with electronics so i'm going to try it on my brothers back up with a crack, that way if i screw it up a bit i wont be too worried.

Take another look at your phone, the crack IS bad.

as bad as these one?

Those were the two my brother dropped. At least i broke mine in the top corner where the damage is a lot less to the screen

The glass has nothing to do with 3G reception. The accident that caused the crack is another story.

Yeah the other two pictures i uploaded where from my brother where he dropped his and got worse cracks. Its funny because i get 3g sometimes but its not all the time. Whenever i'm in my house i completely lose 3g, debating on going and getting an out of warranty replacement or not or just fixing it myself. Its odd because my brothers phones that got cracked both lost 3g ability completely it has to do with how he dropped it because i can get it sometimes, it just doesn't seem to always transfer data when it does.
