Hey Ya'll I was sitting here wondering how in the hell I'm going to fit all of the crap on my desk now, on my desk in my dorm. So I devised a plan. Instead of laying my clamshelled macbook pro horizontal and taking up a lot of space, I could tilt it up vertical and save a lot of room. My question is, is this ok for it? I don't really see why not, because the iMacs are virtually the same thing. So then I was going through Ideas of how to do this, and have it look nice. I had an idea of framing it some how and putting it on the wall like a picture but that wouldn't work because I'm going to have to have the ability to quickly take the pro on the go with me. I then looked at my computer speakers and had the idea of making a glass stand that will support, and keep the pro cool. It shouldn't be that all hard to make, some input from you guys would be great. Also I thought the glass would go well with my speakers, glossy HP screen, and LED lighting behind my desk. Any comments are appreciated, thank you so much.

sounds like a good idea!, but be careful how steep you make the angle. if its too steep it might fall forward if you have a lot of things plugged into it. (pull too hard on the corded mouse, etc)
Corded Mouse? What is this 2007? No I'm kidding. Yeah I see what you're saying. I could make little like 1 inch glass clamps that come out and across the front to hold it in. I could just incase the font in glass too and make it kind of like a slot it slides in. I'm obsessed about gloss...

Could I use plexiglass? I'm thinking of skipping the whole glass thing all together because of difficulty getting it, and just using aluminum. I also had an idea of using white plastic, and making the stand look like a giant white iPod dock.

do you have a local glass place? our tiny town even does, im sure if you had dimensions you could get every piece you needed.

I did some glass etching for a project at school. If you are anywhere but the boondocks you should be able to find a glass place. Buy smaller pieces if you can, the really big pieces cost a fortune (ask me how I know 
), and just mark it up with grease pencil. Take it back to the glass place, and they'll cut it for you for minimal cost. I would looove to see this done to completion. Glass is a pain to work with, but the finished work can be astounding. Don't forget to dull those edges up, too.

Sounds good to me. Don't mean to hijack the thread but what do you use to use your macbook pro in clamshell if anything? I have an external display that i would use in clamshell but i find the process closing, waiting to go to sleep, then waking it up to be a bit annoying. Are there any programs to get around this?

I bought sheets of 4' by 6' sheets of glass for a layered etched glass project. Three sheets at $180 a pop. Ugh. One broke in transit, too. I cringe remembering it.

I'm not sure what you're talking about with having to close and open. I have an external mouse and keyboard, so all I have to do is hit a key, or wiggle the mouse and it will wake up. My mbp pretty much stays closed the entire time. When I'm not using it the screen saver comes on, then after a while it goes to sleep. When I go to sleep and want to sleep it because I sleep right next to it, I just hit control eject then S. And it will sleep.
I've noticed its kinda weird to get it to go into clamshell so what you have to do is start up everything and have everything connected, then close the macbook, then wait for it to sleep. Once its asleep, press a key on the keyboard, or wake it with the mouse. It should awake on the external.
The glass is a pretty good idea, but for a safer way try finding wood to match your desk and then it will all match! I would think the glass would be hard to mold together. But I am not a professional, so don't take all of my advise hahaha

That is a great idea! I could have it between two glass sheets vertical and a couple of inches above the ground!
