This has been happening for as long as I can remember, but I’m finally frustrated and/or curious enough to ask others, do you also have issues with the Gmail app refreshing much too quickly? Like only after a couple seconds of using another app?

For me this is when Gmail always reloads:
I do a search for an email, then select an email from the results (an email must be selected for this issue to happen), then switch to any other app, then switch back to Gmail either immediately or after a couple seconds. The search results will always be gone, and the search word(s) will always be gone from the search bar, BUT the content of the selected email will still be showing. This is extremely annoying because if I’m trying to go through the emails in the search results, but I want to leave the app to take notes or look up reference or replying to a text etc, then I have to redo the search and find my place in the list every time I come back to the Gmail app, which is a huge time waster. I could sometimes work around this by using split screen or slide over, but that can take more time if I’m switching between more than two apps, and some apps don’t support multitasking.

I have this issue with both my iPads, but I have to disclose, they both only have 4gb of ram I believe (2017 12.9” iPad Pro and iPad Mini 5), which is on the smaller side by today’s iPad standards, and a lot less than the max ram iPad of 16gb. BUT like I said I recall this happening since the beginning, back when 4gb was the max ram in any iPad (or iPhone), so I don’t think it can’t be because the software is optimized for more ram. The other reasons I don’t think 4gb ram is the real issue: if it was a ram issue, I’d think the whole app would reload, not just the search results; this is the only app that has this immediate reload issue, all other apps are fine; it only happens when I do the specific task of search, and only if I select an email from the results, which is too specific; there’s just not enough tasks going on that should cause it to reload every time; and finally, even my old iPhone SE 2016 with 2gb ram doesn’t have this issue, albeit it’s a different device, but the same at the core, as I understand.

So I’m thinking it has to be a software issue. If other people with higher ram iPads have the same issue, that would pretty much confirm it. If it only happens to iPads with 4gb or less, then I guess it is a ram issue, but it’s still very perplexing because of the reasons I listed.

So please let me know if this is happening to you. And if so, which iPad are you using? Any other thoughts on this?
Much appreciated.

It’s a Gmail app thing (12.9” M1, 16GB, 1TB).

On the upside, the desktop version Gmail website works pretty decently on Safari starting with iPadOS 13.

Aha- thanks for the confirmation. It’s befuddling why Google would allow such a bad experience in their app. Only thing I can think of is maybe they only make their apps good on Android and they are trying to frustrate iPad users into switching. Of course, I’d sooner switch email services.

Hm maybe I’ll take a look at Gmail on Safari again.
