Gmail App: How to Open Safari Within?

good morning

Whenever I get a MR or any other forum email, or any email with a link for that matter, I am given the option to either open the link (within the gmail app) in Safari or Chrome. However, I would much prefer to go directly
to the Safari app itself upon clicking a link.

I could have sworn this used to be an option a year ago. But then again I’ve had the same iPhone for a year. I’ll include a photo of the option I’m given upon clicking a link and the Safari button I have to tap afterwards to open Safari.

Ideally I would like to just click the link itself and have the Safari app open.

In the Gmail app go to Settings and then to Google app settings and there you can choose which app you want to use and whether or not you want to be asked every time.

Actually, sorry turns out after changing that setting all that’s changed is I don’t get the option to choose between Chrome or Safari. Instead upon clicking on a link within an email it just takes me to the Safari version still WITHIN the gmail app.

I’m wanting it to open the Safari app itself.

That's likely more on Gmail's side to have it work that way or not. It seems like that's the option they offer in those app settings, yet for Chrome they will open it in the actual separate app, but it sounds like for Safari instead of opening it directly in Safari they chose to open it in a Safari view within the Gmail app itself.

You’re right. Just tested it and it works perfectly when I just installed the Chrome app but not with the Safari app.

Same thing happens with Hangouts; you select to open Safari but it uses its own internal browser instead. I logged a bug months ago but it's never been fixed. I can only suggest that you log your own bug report in the hope that they pay attention to multiple reports.

I stopped using Gmail App because of this, it’s ridiculous they took away the option to use Safari and chose to push there own app instead.

Well, it's still a Safari view within the app, which is what most apps basically do when it comes to opening up links (and then in that view usually offer an option to open in Safari itself). It's even possible that this type of flow is what's suggested by Apple as part of their developer guidelines or best practices or something like that.

I hope I don't get killed for this but I much prefer the Safari view that does NOT open the Safari app. That means one less junk tab I have hanging around when I launch Safari. If I truly want to open it in Safari from Gmail there's a button in the Safari view that lets me do that.
