I use gmail in mail.app and everything's working fine except for one thing. I'm trying to make it so when I push the delete button in mail, it will archive it. I read that that you have to switch it from putting it in the trash to the "all mail" folder like I did in mail on my mac.

It no worky though :(

here are some pics of what I'm trying to do. If I'm totally off, let me know.

I hit the "Deleted Messages"

and select "All Mail"

and I back to the main menu, head back in to check to see if it stayed and it already switched back to going to the trash (i know it's confusing)

P.S. I'm sorry if this was already mentioned in that huge bug-list thread but I really don't have that kind of time :) And I did search and found nothing like this.

I'm having the same issues from Day 1, I've spent hours trying to figure it out and test different options... nada. Please help.

I had the same issue, except with the Desktop Mail.app. Just follow this guide. It is written for a desktop Mail.app, but the concept holds for the iPhone version. I use it on my iPhone, and it works like a charm! If you need any more help, just ask!

Well, that too some of time and it didn't work for me. Why can't it just work like it did on the first iPhone? I just added the account (not via the auto Gmail config) and set the folder to AllMail... it was that simple. Help? Is no one else having this issue?

I just tried that too and checked the behavior, it is still putting it in the trash. When I got to Is there a an update for 2.0 since Saturday, perhaps? I am still having the same issues as above: "

I'm getting really frustrated. I have gmail for both my home email and work and I need to be able to archive or I will have a cluttered inbox. This is a really important function for me... strange that I had no problem on the original iPhone.

after deleting my Gmail accoutn from my iPhone several times (and manually configuring it each), it finally worked. Whew. Thanks, all!

I know exactly how to fix this problem.

1) Delete your current Gmail account configuration in your iPhone.
2) Set up a new mail account, but DO NOT click on Gmail. Rather, click "Other" and manually enter all the settings (follow these)
3) Go here and click the "iPhone" link and follow those recommended settings.

Voila.

Perfect, follow the above instructions.

also, don't forget to turn OFF "Sync select Mail accounts" in iTunes on the info tab under your iPhone.

On your iPhone go to; settings; mail, contacts, calendars settings; Accounts (your gmail account name); advanced; Mailbox behaviors;
drafts mail box = "drafts" on the server
Sent mail = "sent mail" on the server
deleted mailbox ="all mail" on the server

I sent and saved and deleted many test messages on my laptop, gmail web, and iPhone and all mail is going to the proper place. If anyone still has issues I'll try and do the best i can to clear things up.

What happens if you dont? I was hoping to backup these accounts (I have three, one personal and two work) so I would be able to easily restore them if I had to wipe the phone or something happened to it.

If you keep "sync mail accounts" that will move your settings from Mail onto the iPhone.
from the info tab in iTunes
"Syncing Mail accounts syncs your account settings, but not your messages. To add accounts or make other changes, tap Settings then Mail, Calendars on this iPhone"
the backup is what saves all the messages.
