Like likely many others, I was super excited when updating to iOS11 to have gmail actually work on my iPhone again! For years (even though I have 15min fetch enabled), gmail would only update if I did so manually. It was great to see emails come up on my Apple Watch (something I had rarely come across).

Now for the last few days it seems like it's gone back to behaving like it used to, where gmail only refreshes manually, showing unread emails hours after they've been checked/deleted elsewhere.

Anyone else experiencing this?

iOS mail should be polling every 15, 30 or 60 min; check your mail settings under Accounts/Passwords at the bottom. It should not be hours and need manual refreshing.

The issue still happens on wi-fi, and when connected to power. (I've just tried switching to this new 'automatic' setting to see if that's any better).

When it was working on the 15min fetch, it worked anywhere, which is what I'd want.

Are you on Wi-Fi and connected to power?

Being connected to WiFi and power should have no effect on the 15 minute fetch setting, unlike the Automatic setting.

I’ve had a similar experience with regards to Gmail not fetching in iOS 10 and a fix in iOS 11. However, just yesterday I noticed a few emails that didn’t come through. I would honestly just chalk it up to iOS 11 being quite buggy thus far, and hoping that a fix will come soon.

In the meantime, you could always try a Reset All Settings or even a restore, but my experience with iOS 11 has proven that can sometimes cause more problems.

Hopefully that Automatic setting works for you, but here’s to hoping there’s a fix soon.

No problem with Gmail fetch for me. Works fine. How do you have notifications set? Maybe coming but not notifying you unless you go into application.

I've had that issue too. More often it took hours to fetch new emails even though it's set on 15min.

Then I gave up and enabled notifications for the Gmail app and started using this more, specially when I had time sensitive emails.

I noticed that iOS 11 worked better, but still have Gmail notifications enabled, and by now I'm used to pay more attention to the Gmail app than Apple's Mail app.

Unrelatedly, I did this a few weeks ago and that didn't seem to change anything (with regards to this). Perhaps I'll give it another try.

Hope it is something that they work out though...

I have notifications set so they come up, and on the rare chance that it works, I do get the notifications. That just never happens...

I can confirm this issue for quite awhile. On my 6S+ & even now on my 8 I think it’s happening. It seems no mail unless you open the app then oh $&@“XX ding!

Why not just install a Gmail app? Works fine on any iOS device with instant new mail notifications, label management, etc.

I really dislike google app UI/UX in general, and I have a thing about keeping stock apps/setups on all my computers, so when I get a new one, it's less stuff to do.

Plus, I wouldn't want to give google the bump in statistics because their stuff is messing up.

Ok, I brokedown and installed the Gmail app... and I hate it. Such awful design from google. Everything is in different places for seemingly no reason. Like the archive buttons being at the TOP of the screen (on a thumb based UI).

Does anyone know of an alternative to the stock mail.app but that looks and feels like it? Or as closely to it as possible? I don't really care about extra features or anything, I want it to just work.

The way I have set up is have gmail app for notification with no badge , once I get notified I open the mail app to read.
Have tried many apps , email by by easily do is closet to stock app but also has it flaws.

I thought about doing that, and using it only for notifications, but then that leaves me waiting for it to refresh anyways (and you can't click on the notification or you go to the gmail app). I guess it's an improvement.

I'll have a look at emai, thanks.

The first and the second paragraph feel contradictory.

I'm sure you have provided your feedback to Apple about some of the issues you've faced in iOS/Apple apps. Why not do something similar here? I would guess Apple wouldn't have changed their core design and the same with Google.

As to the second paragraph, it is Apple/Mail app messing up and not Google. You already use one of Google's services then why the urge to not use the app just so that their numbers become better? Why would one even care about something like that? Seems (pardon my usage of the term) petty.

In any case, have you tried using the Outlook app for Gmail? I have it on for my Gmail, Yahoo and (work) exchange servers and it's doing a pretty good job. May I also suggest that you try Google's other email app called Inbox. Although I do not like it better than the regular Gmail app, a lot of the folks have great opinion on them.

Sorry, none of these are native apps, but the problem with fetch is due to the native app and unless Apple changes that, things will just remain the way they are.

Exactly my solution to Apple's buggy Mail app.
Gmail app for notifications and to manage labels.

Though it would be nice if someday Apple implemented push for Gmail like other mail apps do. I wish right?

Yeah, I guess it's a funny thing, and two different points. Like I avoid any 'poweruser' type things on my desktop/laptop too, so if I use someone else's computer (or upgrade mine), I'm not missing my special apps/hotkeys/etc...

I guess it is Apple messing things up here, specifically with Google/Gmail. I've been wanting to have a dedicated email server for years, I just haven't gone the extra mile and done that.

Got an email from Google yesterday about why am I not using the GMAI app? Which is exactly why I don't. If I had my choice I'd run nothing from Google. They are totally interested in stealing every piece of data from you and selling it Sorry that I ever did a gmail account. How they know what I am running and what I'm not
For those who are having problems - it is probably Google screwing things up so you'll switch to their product making it easier to steal your information.
