iPad Gmail links?

Hi
Apologies at the outset - I'm fairly new at this ios malarkey.
Why do links in Gmail messages not work?
I've tapped it & pressed it but nothing happens!
How can I fix this?

Links in my gmails work fine.

Are you using the gmail app?

Are you using the stock mail app or the gmail app itself? When using the stock mail app, a single tap on the link should automatically bring you to safari if that’s what you’re using for a browser. If you’re using the gmail app, a single tap is also all that is needed, but instead of being brought out of the mail application and into safari, a browser will open right within the gmail app itself.

Yes, I'm using the Gamail app. I have both Safari & Chrome but none of them open when I tap or push the link - just sits there.

rather than http://www.gaml...
I sent another link missing the www part & that didn't work either but the more common form does.
How weird.
