Gmail notifications in Safari

Does anyone know anything about Gmail notifications from Safari? They work in Chrome, so theoretically they should work in Safari too, but Google's own documentation says they only work in Chrome. I'd assumed that was just because only Chrome supported notifications, but now that Safari does too, it's still not working.

I receive phone calls at my Google Voice number through Gmail, so I like to keep it open, even though I use Mail.app for e-mail.

Speaking of which, how does Chrome work in Notification Center?? I thought only MAS apps could use it?

You can manually request notification permission for Gmail. Then Gmail will use Safari 6 notification.

Check your assumptions. Do you think it's possible that Chrome and Gmail both being from Google might lead to better integration than Gmail and Safari?

Of course, but Gmail's using standard HTML5 notifications here, which are supported in Safari. The only reason it doesn't work on its own in Safari seems to be that Google programmed it to only request permission if you're using Chrome.

Now hopefully Safari's next version will switch private browsing to a window-based thing, rather than full app (like Chrome). Not counting on it though. I usually use Gmail, but used to always leave Chrome opened signed into Gmail so when someone called my Google Voice number, I'd receive the call and get a notification. Now I can do that with Safari, but I'd like to be able to have my sign-in be independent of the rest of my browsing without using a whole separate browser.

I've given Chrome a chance. There are a lot of little things I like better about Safari (although the translation of pages thing in Chrome is nice, but that doesn't come up very often for me), but the biggest reason I can't switch to Chrome is that it basically forces you into using tabs instead of giving you flexible tab/window choices like other browsers. I never use tabs, I think it's a waste to use them when you've got Exposé. Plus no tab bar means more screen real estate as an added bonus!

I agree with you on the tabs, I wish chrome made it easier to use windows instead of tabs all the time. Chrome is better but I must admit that's partly why i like using safari from time to time.
