Over the last few years I have become a big fan of Gmail, particularly the ability to archive messages. I have heard it repeatedly mentioned that the iPhone will work with Gmail, but I am really interested in how exactly it will be implemented. Is it just going to be a POP account, or are they going to allow for full Gmail functionality including archiving? In theory you could just use Gmail through Safari, but it would be really slick if they integrated it in the mail client.

I have thought about this my self, truly a great question. I think the ability for Google to creat a web app to allow the GMAIL experience to be tailored to the iPhone would be very easy to implement. In reality though from the get go, it will most likely function like a POP account. Good post
Right now you can only use it through Pop, but Yahoo has a full email client. But, I bet we can expect a full gmail client soon, since Apple is using other google applications on the phone, (gmaps).
Assuming they don't ultimately drop in a special app I'll just punch in the pop3 info for gmail. I've been quite happy with how gmail works with Outlook so the iPhone should work just as well.
It does not appear that there will be any direct integration at launch...at least not in the way of push email like Yahoo has. But I'd be willing to bet that because of the other direct implementation of google products onto the phone (maps, youtube..owned by google), that google will work with apple to make it more gmail friendly.

Gmail is all about the web-based apps (Gmail, Picasa, Documents, etc). It'll only take a few months of work with either their SDK access to iPhone or making a nice widget wrapper for Gmail and you'll have a slick client on your iPhone to access your Gmail. Now whether or not it'll be integrated with the Mail app, I guess we'll have to see how plugin-friendly the iPhone mail truly is...
Gmail has an option to forward email anywhere WITHOUT deleting or moving the forwarded email from your gmail inbox. SO, just forward to a YAHOO email account and PUSH that to your iphone. I'd imagine you can set up your iphone to reply from whatever account you want.
I love how Gmail is still in 'beta.'

I was wondering the exact same thing as the original poster, and figured this would answer itself after messing with the phone for the first couple of days (which I like better, I mean - safari or the mail app with gmail), but damn applehappy, that's an awesome idea!! Thanks!
Edit: Just thought of one downside though - Yahoo accounts are prone to spam, and their bulk filter is annoyingly bad. But I think there's a way to turn that off. I wonder if there's a way to only whitelist the address your gmail will be coming in through, too. Hmm.

Yeah true, definitely going to give that a try! It will be interesting to see how the gmail support is inside the iPhone's mail app, too. (With regard to labels, stars, etc.)
I think that what they call Gmail support is going to be just pre-entered POP settings and you type in email address and p/w, but maybe they will do something cool.

When they announced the iPhone, the Google CEO came on stage and talked about a growing relationship with Apple. I also read an article recently about a lot of future stuff coming from Google and Apple (combined).
I think this means a tight integration of not only Gmail, but all Google Apps, .Mac, OS X, Google Docs, iWork, and the iPhone.
I really think they're going to combine Apple's hardware/software with Google's software to try to make an Exchange/Office killer.
And the start of that would be a well-integrated Gmail!

I love it. I'm convinced that SJ's push toward web 2.0 was not some way of getting around an SDK, but because he's already knee deep with google on web 2.0 solutions for the post-pc (iphone/mobile computer) era.

It would be unlike apple to have two seperate email apps, one for gmail and one for everything else. So I say look to google making gmail IMAP with push support rather than Apple making a gmail widget or special program, it just wouldn't make sense otherwise.
In fact I set up my gmail account to forward to my yahoo account two days ago with exactly this in mind.
Not to mention you can just open gmail in safari and it'll be the same web-based gmail you're used to using.
