Not sure if this is related to High Sierra 10.13.5. For some reason, Gmail has become erratic in the "Mail" app. Most of the time I see that little wavy icon next to the Gmail folder. Sometimes if I right click on it, it says to "take accounts online" and sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. Meanwhile, Outlook, Hotmail and Yahoo mail work fine while this happens.

One way to temporarily fix it is to go into Settings/Internet accounts and delete my Gmail account and then immediately reinstall it. I switched most of my important contacts to Gmail because of problems with Outlook which now works fine. Thinking of switching them back to Outlook as this is getting to be a PITA and I'm worried about missing important mail.

Anyone else having a problem like this with Gmail?

Yes. I had been getting the the offline symbol on my Gmail (Google Apps) account and did the same thing. Completely deleted the internet account and then re-added it last week.

I haven't noticed it since then.

My suspicion is on Google and their ever-evolving APIs and security methods.

One thing...are you on a local network with others also connecting to Gmail via IMAP?

I'm connecting from my home wifi. My problem sounds the same as yours. Gmail has beem my "go to" mail since I had a LOAD of trouble recently with hotmail/outlook mail. Yikes!!!

I'll keep an eye on it.

Do you have 2-factor authentication enabled with Google?

I'm on Sierra, BTW.
I don't think the browser matters when using the High Sierra Mail app. I don't seem to have any trouble getting Gmail if I go the APP route (gmail.com).

Not sure what you're talking about here.
A little garbled. What I meant was I can access my gmail at gmail.com no matter what browser I'm using, but in the High Sierra Mail app, my gmail account is almost ALWAYS off line while hotmail, outlook and yahoo mail is online in the Mail App.

Right.

I was asking about 2-Factor as it's ON for me. Not sure if it has anything to do with the issue in the Mail app. To log into my Google account in Internet Accounts I had to go through the 2-Factor process. Just wondering if you used it, also.

Actually that's not my big problem at the moment other than it also involves gmail which I was using for my iCloud account. I tried to change my PW with iCloud (gmail) and went into a black pit. It was a 2 step BTW. Gmail has now locked me out for 24 hours and I'm supposed to try again for Gmail (8AM tomorrow). I was able to change my iCloud account to another user name and I'm NOT messing around with that one again.

Nope, must be a HS issue. What if you create another user account on Mac then add the account ? Do you have temporary problems then?

I have 3 gmail accounts, but only one is almost always offline when I open High Sierra Mail program. Usually with a right click, I can turn it on. The other 2 gmail accounts are always up and ready to go.

The solution is to dump the "offender" which I'm probably going to do. However, it's the one that I use for websites such as banking, etc, etc. So I'm going to first have to sign into those websites and change my email address. The only reason I was using gmail is because I went through a period with much the same trouble with hotmail and outlook.

When I'm done with that, I'm going to change the PW for the offender to something like !@#$%%^&*()(*&^%$#@!pluck you in case some bad troller has the email address.
