Gmail push notifications not working

I just downloaded the new version of google that includes push notifications for gmail. I enabled them, they show as being enabled both in the google app and in settings>notifications. I am getting push notifications for all other applications that have them (CNN, etc.), but do not get one when a new email comes in. Any ideas?
