Gmail vs Native app?

I've been using email forwarding from Gmail to an Apple email address in order use "push".

I love the functionality of Apple's Mail for iOS app... It's simple, efficient and clean. The Gmail app isn't as nice, in my opinion.

However; my Gmail account now has over 70k emails stored thanks to forwarding... So I'm thinking I need to find a new solution in order to keep Gmail active.

Is my only option for Push to use the Gmail app? Or is there another alternative I don't know of yet? I like having email backups, but the forwarding isn't always reliable (tons of "fail to send" emails in the Gmail account).

Why don’t you just log into your gmail account in Accounts to use in the Mail app? I have several gmail accounts set up and everything works great.

If you don’t want to do that, you can go into the forwarding settings on gmail and tell it to delete or archive mail it forwards to keep it out of the inbox.

Are you just using fetch for mail retrieval?

I have my Gmail account just set up in the native app and have no issues just using that. When out on mobile data it just fetches every 15mins which i find is fine, most you'd have to wait to get an email is that long and if you are expecting an email or want to force it to check you can easily and now when on wifi, since iOS12 i think, it pushes email through straight anyway.

I used to have it pushing until Google stopped it and cant say i've had any issues since having to swap to Fetch instead...i'm not that desperate for my email to be with me instantly instead of waiting at the most 15 mins.

I have a gmail account in the mail app, no problem there - set to an hourly fetch.
I only use push for calendar.

I use both apps and miss the push functionality on iOS app, my current setup is push notification enabled on gmail with no badge and open iOS app to read mail, takes few seconds to refresh mailbox but that's tradeoff and you are notified straight away.
I don't even open gmail app anymore and it is hidden away in folder.

I have it set to fetch and I get them just as fast as if they were pushed there. I normally have no problems making it through a day on my phone battery, but if i know it might be a long day sometimes I will turn off fetch and leave it on a 15 or 30 minutes fetch which works well for me.

Use the native mail app on iOS and MacOS with my Gmail account just fine. Fetch is set to 15 minutes but it often seems quicker than that. If I want to "sit on" the mailbox to get an email ASAP I'll use Safari and keep refreshing the page.

Recently I simply set up my Gmail account on my iPhone so I could use the Mail app: But this made another mess as it didn't seem to sync well with the Gmail account (it didn't always delete emails... or emails that I read would come back as unread).

Yes: but I’d rather a badge alerting me on how many messages are in the inbox: pop up notifications become very intrusive at times.

You can have that too for new messages in inbox.

Only way to get real push notifications with default email app is while the device is on wifi and plugged in, other than that is just fetch.

Outlook for iOS does "kind of push" notifications with gmail and also is a nice and efficient app

May be you should give Edison Email a try. It's also simple, efficient and clean. Also it is a free app, but you have to opt-out data sharing after start using the app in settings! Otherwise data will be shared with Edison. But give it a try. Push is working with all of my 7 accounts I'm using.
