Do you have network connectivity? either E, 3G or WiFi? I sometimes find I do not have any internet signal when I get that message.

I use the email app 50 times a day and only get that error once every couple months.

Does this always happen or do you have intermittent issues with it?

internet is working, hotmail account is working

try this: add a new microsoft exchange account... you will get an error about server, type m.google.com... SSL on...

Using wi-fi you get the same error ?

Receive Issues

Hello,

I'm having the opposite issuse. I seem to be able to send email via my IPhone through GMail but I can't receive it. I get the message.. ( Cannot Get Mail....The user name or password for *******@gmail.com is incorrect ).

Well I know that isn't true because I can send and receive email just fine on my MAC G5 OS X Tiger 10.4.11 using Mail 2.1.3 (753.1). The settings are exactly the same on the IPhone as are on the MAC G5.

I just purchased a MAC PRO with Snow Leopard and installed the update 10.6.1 and In Mail 4.1 created the same exact accounts ( POP ). I run into the ( CAN SEND/CANT RECEIVE )
issue as well. If I go into the GMAil settings and ( Enable IMAP ) then I can receive and send as long as I delete the accounts in Mail 4.1 as POP and recreate them as IMAP.

Thing is, I don't like having the GMail Mail Boxes appear in my Mail 4.1 program. All I want is the Default mail boxes that are there before you even add accounts...( INBOX....DRAFTS....SENT....TRASH.....)

For now I came up with a temporary solution, I simply got a router and hooked both my MACS up to the Internet and I use the G5 with the older Mail App to send and receive my Gmail it works like it always has.
Until Apple comes out with a Update to fix this issue I guess that's how I will have to do it.

I just can't figure out why it doesn't work on my IPhone now I haven't changed a thing in the settings.

still not working for me.... anybody else with the issue?

Do you have any weird characters in your password? In the past I have had problems with Yahoo if I had and ampersand in my password. It was fine on the mac but wouldn't work on the iPhone.

No, no weird characters. I still can't get Mail 4.1 via POP to work, sending is fine, receiving no.
I do see the incoming mail activity and even hear the sound
that indicates new mail has arrived but it doesn't appear anywhere in the Mail 4.1. App.

I did fix my IPhone issue even though I am not sure I understand what exactly occurred.
After getting that Cannot Get Mail message I decided to try
and delete my account off my IPhone and redo it from scratch.
That didn't work I still got the same message.

So I deleted the account one more time on the IPhone but when it came to that window where you choose
what Mail server you want to use...GMAIL....YAHOO...ect...ect I didn't choose GMAIL I chose OTHER.

That's when I got a message that really through me, ( THIS IS NOT A VALID IMAP ACCOUNT ). I kind of shook my head and said to myself... DUH!

It never was an IMAP account it's always been POP. Well I ignored the message and continued setting up the account and when all was done...WALLA!

I was good to go on the IPhone again.

I believe what occurred is when I couldn't get Mail 4.1 to work with my POP settings I went into my GMAIL account and in the settings I enabled IMAP.
I'm assuming, I DONT KNOW....that by doing so GAMIL somehow sent information to my IPHone fooling it into thinking it was an IMAP setup and not POP.
The settings on the IPhone where indeed setup as POP but it somehow thought it was IMAP.

This is just a theory, I have no real clue, I don't really understand how IMAP works. All I know is when I chose OTHER instead of GMAIL as my email account
and entered my GMAil POP settings my IPhone went back to work.

Deleting the account off my phone and setting it up choosing OTHER fixed my Phone at least.
I can send and receive once again via POP.
