If I decided to install the developer beta OS18. If I back up I can but go just go back to 17 correct?

Will my watch still get messages etc

If you roll back your iPhone to iOS 17, it will NOT pair with Watch OS 11 beta. I don't know what version of the Apple Watch OS you have, but if you installed 11 beta, you will be SOL.

Haven’t installed OS. I know it can’t be reverted. Was asking if messages etc would go through as normal

You can revert to iOS 17 after installing iOS 18, but you will have to use IPSW. As for your watch, if it is updated to Watch OS 11 beta, you will NOT be paired once you revert back to iOS 17; therefore, you will NOT get any messages or any function related to your iPhone.

At this point in the beta cycle, I would not be considering going back to iOS 17, unless iOS 18 really breaks functionality of your devices, which has not been reported so far.

We should now go on a weekly beta cycle for iOS 18.0, so even if something gets wrong, it will most likely be resolved within several days. The most recent example of it was the cellular connection drop-outs brought by DB4v2 (PB2) and fixed in DB5 (PB3).

Then it is up to you to decide how tolerant you are to these occasional hiccups, not optimised battery life, etc.

PS Just to make sure, we are talking about iOS 18.0 and not iOS 18.1 betas here.

You cannot restore an ios18 backup to ios17 so unless you took a backup before installing 18 and archived it you would have to start again if you reverted.

you would need to restore iOS 17 using iTunes or your Mac. this would wipe your phone back to factory settings.

if you're on 18 your watch needs to be on 10 or 11. if you're on 17 then it needs to be be on 10.

If you don’t know the answer to this, that’s a sign you shouldn’t mess with the betas
or you could just answer the question and let them decide. we all have to learn somewhere. I wish people would stop acting like using a beta is dangerous or you need multiple devices to use it.

Did you create a backup of iOS 17 before upgrading to iOS 18 beta?
  • If yes, you can downgrade through IPSW using iTunes [Windows or macOS Mojave and earlier] or Finder [macOS Catalina and newer] and restore your data through backup afterwards...
  • If no, you can downgrade through IPSW using iTunes [Windows or macOS Mojave and earlier] or Finder [macOS Catalina and newer] but you cannot restore your iOS 18 beta backup or you will need to start from scratch...
Since I do not create a backup and have already transferred the photos and videos to an external storage, and most of the apps I have installed are just Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Twitter [now called X], and others that are not saving contents locally, I just performed an IPSW downgrade and start fresh... This is what I have been doing back in iOS 15.x and iOS 16.x days...

I don't use Apple Watch but as far as I know, there is no downgrade that an end user can immediately or easily perform and you will need to visit to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Center...
