Say he dies middle of this year(which everyone hopes wont happen), how long would apple survive without him? Is Apple really strong enough?

Well, assuming he's the man making ALL the decisions, I can see them regain at least some focus on hardware (quality), Macs, pro apps, and bugs (as opposed to iTunes, iPhones and dreaming up further tie-ins and revenue streams).

However, I doubt he's the only one having a say in that company.

So, for how long will they survive (at the size they are now)? Well, until the lowest common denominator consumers moves on to the next shiny thing.

No man is an island, not even Steve.

Apple will be fine, the stock price will drop, analyst will say the sky is falling, in 6-12 months time apple will release a new shiny, thin object and the fan boys will lose their $#!* over it and whip out there credit cards.

Apple would take a short term hit obviously, but in the long run they would be fine.

For as long as any company whose CEO dies and a replacement is found?

Seriously, Sun Microsystems is still kicking around the valley despite having a load of crap CEOs. Yahoo! is still alive and they had freaking Jerry Yang as their CEO. And of course, Microsoft are as strong as ever without lil' Bill at the helm.

Nobody need be worried about Steve's leave of absence. In fact, it's pathetic that people keep discussing something so completely irrelevant to Apple's products as the health of the CEO who, contrary to popular belief, is not the only guy running the company.

My new iMac crashes once a week when my old one crashed once, iPhone could be way better, MobileMe never works.... Might be time for a change.

I really don't want to talk about this but...

I have to say somethings. In July 2008, he reported that he was cancer-free. If this food absorbency thing is just a cover-up for the stocks and his cancer actually came back, it would be in an early stage that would most likely be curable. Even though he had a rare case of pancreatic cancer, he was cured. Agreed? With his first release about his health to the public, he made it sound like it was no big deal. Now he has said that his health issues are more severe than he and his doctors thought. What does this mean? Well, IMO it means that Steve may have cancer again. What is a side effect of chemotherapy? Weight loss. Sure the food absorbency fits but he's had cancer before. Everybody that I've heard is saying that he's going to die. I don't believe it. Unless they have his health records and charts then I don't know how they could be so sure of something. I think that Apple would take a hit in the stocks. Look what happened to Apple when Steve was fired! It kind of went down the tubes. I sure hope that doesn't happen again. As he said in his second release, he will be looking over the major things but nothing very strenuous. I hope everything goes well and Steve comes comes out of his leave and returns to good health. BTW, does anyone find it interesting that on his bio on Apple.com it says he has 3 kids when on his Wikipedia page it says he has 4. Are they not counting Lisa whose mother was terribly mistreated by Steve. Don't get me wrong, he's a great guy and I have nothing against him because he has fixed his past with Lisa and her mother. But then again they do have a very old picture of him so if they did the bio when they took that picture, I guess his wife could of had a child.

It's hard to say but given Apple's history, they will be around for at least 15 years until it dies due to customer loyalty, but without a long-term vision with the likes of pioneers like SJ, Apple is sure to be doomed.

Everybody that I've heard is saying that he's going to die. I don't believe it.

He is going to die, whether or not it is in the near future is up in the air.

His health has been the source of speculation now for at least a year, if not longer. Apple has plans in place, and if things have been serious enough for him to take the leave from work, then he's likely not been making all the decisions for at least a month, if not longer. Apple is not just Steve. Any company that is tied completely to one man is doomed to fail. Car accidents happen, people slip in the shower, people young and old die in unexpected ways every day. Apple knows this and for a multi-billion dollar corporation not to have some sort of continuity plan should the unthinkable happen would be just plain stupid.

There will be a stock hit, and depending on who takes over, Apple could thrive or be run into the ground (think back to the early-mid 1990s). Hopefully the 90s taught them some lessons about Apple's place in the market and will allow them to thrive long after Steve's and our (hopefully none-too-soon) passing. But even if they start to falter, I would expect OS X to be snapped up by some entity and exist in some way/shape/form.

Dear Steve Jobs,

Before you bite the dust, would you mind telling the troops to design a netbook, preferrably with a 10" or 11" screen, one of Intel's new CULV processors, and at least 2 USB ports? Also, think about adding a 3rd USB port to the 15" MBP. Personally, I don't need more than two, but even cheaper, smaller netbooks have 3 USB ports, and it's difficult to explain to people why it should only have two ports just because you don't think we need more. What if one stops working? It could happen very quickly, you know, and without warning, much like when a body suddenly stops absorbing food. S*** happens, as I'm sure you can attest to.

Anyway, take care. We wouldn't want my our Apple stock to drop in value, now would we?

He's the one that gripped Apple tight and raised it from perdition.
Hopefully he has taught Cook, Schiller, etc a thing or two.
If he doesn't die I'm expecting what he does when he returns to be amazing.

Do people honestly think that Steve Jobs makes every decision at Apple?

Come on, if he did quit or die then he'd be replaced by someone who likely has a better education than him. That can't hurt, can it?

yes, Steve's hands are not as firm as they used to be. And with age his eyesight is not improving.

Perfectly said.
Now get back to Sydney.

To everyone: Noone is indispensable, if Jobs were to die, the company would continue and their products will remain the same. Not ignoring basic human morale, i would assume that the new-CEO would be someone of importance, and most likely a personal friend of Jobs, who would continue to run the company based on Jobs legacy.

The company will continue making macs.
They will continue inventing paper-thin laptops.
They'll eventually smell the coffee and mac a netbook.
They will eventually expand into better things.

People ignore the fact that they made the iPod and iPhone, how random is it for an Operating System and Computer manufacturer to make a sophisticated MP3 player, not to mention the most popular MP3 player which has monopolized the name of digital music players ("Take that iPod out of your ears" "what do you have on your iPod?" "I want to get an iPod to play music"). Not to mention, to expand that technology into a multi-touch compatible touch-screen unit, and FURTHER expand THAT firmware into a phone, capable of GPS functionality, desktop-quality web browsing, expandability, bluetooth and an excellent method of SMS (bar the lack of landscape), all packaged onto Mac OS X ALONG WITH their famous iPod system!

Hmm.. I'm sure the company will continue to make the quality products they're customers stick to them for.
I think the worst that could happen is that the company starts making wrong moves due to the lack of jobs influence, and they go too... windows like.

A higher education doesn't guarantee more creativity or vision
