I'm not much of a gamer any more, but, a long time ago I really enjoyed playing Lucas______ X-Wing

Referencing the link above, GOG.com has updated this game for modern hardware, and is available not only for DOS/windows, but also for Lunix and OS X. The GOG page indicates the game requires Mac OS X 10.7 and above and cost USD $9.99.

I'm planning on purchasing this and running it on my top-end 2014 Mac Mini

And to get to the point of this thread, wondering if someone else here is doing similar, and what recommendations for joystick(s) might be for this game.

Thank you,

Since I have first-hand experience with the GOG version of X-Wing, I think I can answer that: any USB joystick will do. Pick whatever flight-stick you are comfortable with. I'm even able to play the game with the Saitek X-52 Pro, even if this is completely overpowered for this game.

However, and that has to be pointed out, don't expect the game to support every button, knob, slider and lever. It's still a very old DOS (or depending on the version you'll play very early Windows) game, and doesn't offer any means to configure the controls. The game only supports very basic sticks with two fire buttons, so you'll find that even throttle levers won't do anything.

Thank you for your reply.

I played the game on DOS, pre-windows. I understand that the graphics have been updated somewhat since the DOS release (I'm not expecting much here), and also it states that the code was updated to run on modern hardware.

The game is pretty basic. I think that as long as I can get sound also out of it, and a joystick working with a minimal amount of pain, I expect I will be happy with the game.

Just to clarify something: what you get from GOG are three versions of the game: the original DOS release, the DOS version of the Collector's CD – both bundled with a DOS emulator and completely identical to the versions you know – and a 1998 Windows re-release of the game, which has some minimal updates. Only the DOS version are directly downloadable and playable for Mac.
