Ok so I decided to switch over from the Windows world to Mac, and dove in head first. I knew I would be getting the new unibody 13", but was also in desperate need of a desktop. My only two real option were the mac mini and the Imac. I read as much info as I could find and started leaning towards the mini mac.

I was hesitant because I kept reading how a major upgrade was comming next week for the Mini. Of course those posts started March of 08. Also there were the threads on how pathetic the mini was and horribly outdated it is. Well after some soul searching I went ahead made a lead of faith and picked up the 2.0 mini and laptop on sunday. After leaving the apple store we went frys and picked up a 21 inch ACER monitor for 140.00 and 4 Gigs of ram for 40.00. I already had a keyboard and mouse giving me a grand total investent of 960.00.

The first thing I did was set up my new system and conect it to the AEBS that I also got. I downloaded the software updates and was up and running in a couple of hours. I downloaded all of my music(thank you senuti) uploaded around a thousand pics and three hours of home movies. I loaded iMovie and started to see what the little guy could do. It worked amazingly well for only 1 gig of ram but I could tell it was pushing what its capabilities were. The next day I cracked the case dropped in the 4 gigs and it was like my mini was on crack, it straight flew. Loaded programs like nothing an could run 4-5 aps at a time without a hickup. I am flat out impressed.

Now contrasting my cousin just picked up a nice dell system for less money with much better specs. 500gig HD 3gigs of ram and a 2.8 C2D. However the thing seems to take forever to load basic programs like IE explorer and it slows to crawl when using heavy memory programs like the video editing programs. I didnt have the heart to show him my mini.

So yes the specs on other systems may look much better but I think the problem is that when you have something that works very well you dont go and screw it up because there is a newer slicker piece of hardware out there.

On another note while we were at the apple store I saw three separate people leave with new mini's. For all the complaining about them updating the system it seems that people love whats already on the market.

Congratz on your purchase :)

The 2.0GHz Mac mini is more than sufficient for most people, but it is a bit pricey at $800. However, it's still an excellent switchers machine and fantastic computer.

Likewise,

I've always had laptops as I am hardly ever at home but did need a stationary desktop so I got a MacMini and have loved it ever since.

It actually gets more use now serving as a Sonos Server and a Hub for my external hard disks, not upgraded the RAM yet as for serious stuff I'll use the laptop so all good...

Congrats on your new purchase. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your new Mac mini.

Congrats on ya Mini...

I have had 2 mini's in my life. the 1st was my switch to mac from pc when they were using the PPC and the next was a 2.0 intel. Both systems were more then perfect for what i needed them for at the time. They are not Games machines but i didnt buy it for that. As a media server the mini outshines most others that are on the market by far!

The only reason i sold my mini was to raise the extra funds needed so i could by my MBP. Id still highly recomend ppl to buy one tho.

Congrats on the switch!

I think the reason people are complaining about the mini is not that that it doesn't have enough power, but that the price is too high for what you are paying for (tech that is not worth the $600 anymore).

The Mac mini is a very capable computer. And it's the exact same technology you could get in a low-end portable MacBook in 2006. That's its only problem.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I do mine.

I had to justify the cost saying I bought 300.00 in hardware and 500.00 in software.

Again in apples defense that product has got to be a CASH COW. As much as I hate to admit it we are in a for profit society and apple is making it hand over fist. I smile and happily handed over my money because I have something that works and will work for years.

I recently picked up a used Mac mini with 1.83GHz Core2Duo to replace an old PowerMac MDD dual 1.42GHz. I got it from a guy who advertised on Craig's List for $380. After getting it, I immediately did some upgrades. RAM went to 4GB, HD was upgraded to 500GB, and Combo drive was upgraded to SuperDrive. The computer has been running 24/7 since and I am extremely happy with it. It's far quieter and cooler than the old PowerMac that it replaced and has run flawlessly.

That being said, I was not willing to purchase a new Mac mini or even a refurb from Apple's refurb store because I felt it to be a bit overpriced.

Why buy a mini over an imac? Once you add in the cost of the screen, keyboard. HD, memory etc. , you're pretty close to the low end iMac. Even the least powerful iMac is more powerful than the mini, so what's the point?

I'm in the market for a family computer as I move to a 2 mac setup and considered the mini but it didn't make financial sense

Because someone has a great 20" or bigger x-PVA or x-IPS monitor?

Is that the only reason? No other unique selling point or marketing strategy?

I keep hearing about how the mini is a good htpc/media server but I'd imagine an iMac could do the same thing

Anyway, I don't have any screens lying around so iMac it is :)

The only reason for me would be it's usability in connection with a large HDTV, an iMac as HTPC would simply look stupid next to a TV set. Also the power consumption of an iMac is far greater than that of a Mini.

Maybe you don't like glossy displays, or

You already have a display, keyboard and mouse, or

You hate the wastefulness of replacing your display at the same time as your computer, or

You don't like having to awkwardly reach up to find the sideways optical drive in an iMac, or

You don't even need a display since the computer is for your home theatre, or

You simply can't afford an iMac; $1200 vs. $600.

I could keep going if I had more time. :)

Haha, I was gunna post a thread like this the other day.

I just got a Mac Mini and it's by far the best £400 I've EVER spent. It's amazing, I love it. It's perfect!
:D

+1

I'm also a Mac mini fan.

I have one of the Power PC models (1Ghz G4) still working as a bedroom computer. (mostly, FrontRow stuff) and I have a newer Mini (2Ghz core duo)in the living room acting as my main media server They are very capable machines and have been a pleasure to own. I'll be very tempted to upgrade again when/if the new ones come out.

Well we were actually torn between the Mini the imac and the new white mac book, but in the end it was really the cost and form factor that sold us. This mini will eventually make its way down to my tv. A 42" panasonic 480p plasma that I keep very minimal with accesories.

I know that Mac will be upgrading these sooner or later and if it is a true upgrade(not the atom) then I will probably move this guy fulltime to be a HTPC and put the replacement in the office. If it is more of a hardware downgrade then the new one will be downstairs.
