Going back from GTX570 to GT120 - Am I insane?

I just went front an old MP 1,1 to a newer and leaner MP 4,1.

The old MP1,1 had been fully loaded with 16GB of RAM, 2 Quad Core 3 GHz CPUs and a GTX570 card and was sucking a lot of power from the wall socket.

The MP4,1 with a single 3.33GHz hex CPU is much more efficient.

It turns out none of the apps I routinely use (Lightroom mostly) benefit from GPU processing so I decided to resell the GTX570 and stick to the GT120 for the time being.

Should I still want to go for a bit of GPU acceleration (I am tempted to play a bit with Resolve if I find the time for video editing), what would be a more efficient solution?

Resolve benefits greatly from Cuda graphics cards. The GTX 570 would be a far, far better card for it.

If the GT120 suits your needs for now that would be fine. Though you could have kept the GTX570 as backup or for future needs. For video editing, the GTX570 would perform better.

I don't really have any use for the GTX 570 today, that's why I went "back" to the GT120: less power drain and less noise. I know it is less powerful: 37 vs 1139 in Luxmark (1:30 ratio!).

I thought about keeping the GTX 570 just in case but on the other hand I'm inclined to resell it asap to limit my loss (I bought it used at 120€ and price does not seem to have gone down too much).

But, given the GTX570 is about 2y old now, is there a newer, cheaper (compared to the new price), quieter, lower power mid-range card that would match it performance wise?

My understanding is that for GPGPU, the Fermi series (i.e. GTX 500 series) of video cards are better than the Kepler series (i.e. GTX 600 series). For gaming, I think a newer, cooler, more power efficient, and less expensive card can be fairly easily found in both the GTX 600 and 700 series.

I guess it's fine that you sold your GTX570 Sorry if my suggestion did not fit your situation. I am also conscious on videocards drawing too much power and heat I still have my Nvidia 120GT as my backup card. Didn't want to sell it yet. I use this card if I am just doing light graphic design work.

Insane - no. GPU challenged - yes. I recommend you upgrade firmware to 5,1 and get another Nvida card when you get the opportunity. The 4,1 is a sweet upgrade from the 1,1 - similar to having a Corvette to go to the grocery store for your application of Lightroom.
