I’m really want to try case-less on my XS Max which is on the Apple upgrade program. I will get a screen protector however. Is this a good idea? Does Apple charge extra when returning a phone with scratches on the back surface? Are the back of the X easily scratched?

I've been on the IUP program for a couple years. As long as you aren't rough with your phone you'll be fine. Going caseless has been great. :)

Just look after it and you can't go far wrong. If you want the caseless usage, I recommend a 'sleeve' type case you can slot it into when not using it & just take it out when needed.

I’ve only ever used a case on one iPhone since the 3G (was it the 6 that was so damn slippery?), and I’ve either sold my phone to private buyers or used AT&T Next. I’ve never had visible scratches on my phone. Micro abrasions that you had to been in bright light and squint to see? Yes. Actual visible scratches? Never.

Unless you’re a butterfingers, or really careless, don’t worry about it.

Ive always gone careless, but since I was on the iup my 8 has been in a case and is still immaculate. Hate it though, even after a year.
Thinking of going back for my XS Max, but the thought of not using a case with an £1099 phone scares the bejesus out of me!

How good a condition do the phones have to be in when upgrading/trading in?

Anymore feedback on this? Really want to go caseless on the Max, is the glass back easily scratched or cracked?

If you want to see how the phone would look going ceaseless, pop by an Apple store and look at the display phones.
Those things are tortured on a daily basis.

I went ceaseless on the X for a week. I ended up with the Apple leather case.

I’ve been on the iUP since the 7 came out, and have been caseless for much longer. The only requirements for the return phone is that it: powers on, functions properly, and has no chips, cracks, or breaks in the glass. Anything besides this such as dents and scratches aren’t a problem when returning the phone. The worst case when returning the phone is being charged $99 for repairs if the phone is extremely damaged.

This was one of the big draws of the iUP for me, as I always felt bad going careless, as I knew it was hurting my resale value. This isn’t a consideration with the iUP, and gives me some peace of mind

This is my experience as well. I went cashless on 5 and 6 and didn't break a screen or anything. I started the IUP with the 6s+ and have been happily careless on the 7+, 8+, and will be happily careless with the Xs Max. You've got to do some serious damage to be charged upon turn in for the IUP.
