I think the signing window is closed for 5.1.1 so probably this is a pointless thread, but I'm holding on to a sliver of hope here. I have 5.0.1, with SHSH blobs (not sure if this even matters), and I want to upgrade to 5.1.1. Is this possible? If not, can I upgrade to anything besides 6.0 since it's apparently not JB'ed yet?

If tiy have shsh blobs saved then you should be able to use redsn0w or Tinyumbrella look for the tutorials on Iclarfied also several video tutorials on youtube.

You didnt say what iphone model you have and if you have shsh blobs for your phone and for what firmware version.
You have blobs for 5.0.1 but nothing for 5.1.1?
Without blobs for 5.1.1 you can never restore to that firmware version.

4S upgrade requirements

You must have reached your current firmware via an iTunes upgrade/restore
If you have factory fresh or OTA, you cannot upgrade

Your SHSH (and you need both current firmware SHSH and target firmware SHSH - so 5.0.1 and 5.1.1 for you) must have been saved AFTER the iTunes restore to 5.0.1

Similar situation here. How do you know if you have an over air or factory firmware? I'm pretty sure I never updated to 5.0.1 using OTA but can't remember if I updated from 5.0 to 5.0.1 :s

Once you go to do it with redsnow it will tell you that your current built is not compatible.
I updated OTA to 5.1.1 my old 4S before and even with shsh blobs for 5.1.1 I coudnt re-restore to 5.1.1

Damnit. Mine came from the factory with 5.0.1. Looks like I'm SOL.

Is there a way to find out without actually doing it? I have an iPhone 4S jailbroken on iOS 5.0.1, and I’m considering upgrading to 5.1.1, but I’m not yet sure if I want to. I also cannot remember how I got to 5.0.1.

I’d like to find out right now whether it is possible for me to upgrade to 5.1.1, but I do not want to upgrade yet even if it is possible. If you know a way to find out if I’m eligible without actually committing to the process, I’d greatly appreciate it.

(And to pre-empt others who might say, “Just wait until you’re ready to upgrade and then find out,” that is not helpful. What I want is information as to whether it will be possible for me to upgrade when I choose to, and I want that information sooner rather than later.)

Good question.
I tried a while ago to do it with my 4S on 5.0.1 trying to get to 5.1.1 when 6.0 came out and it wouldnt even build the custom 5.1.1 for me when it detected my build wasnt eligable.
So maybe if you try to start the process you can verify without going for it all the way to 5.1.1
