I am thinking about making the switch from the 2010 Macbook Pro 15 to the 2010 Macbook Air 13 w/ 4gb of ram. I currently use the Pro with a 24 Cinema LED Monitor. Works well, but I am thinking about picking up a mac mini (if the next upgrade is nice) or sell the Cinema and go with an iMac.

Anyways, does anyone run a iMac and Air Combo? Any dislikes?

I am using iMac + Air combo. Got all my stuff and heavy-cpu programmes on
the iMac and access it by home sharing, dropbox etc. from the Air. By now this works great.
Lately I have thought about dropping the iMac and buying a cinema display to
use the Air as a main machine. But actually I wouldn't want to miss the extra
powe and wouldn't like to have USB-hubs, external dvd drive (still have to use
it, because Netflix is not yet available here ;) ), ... laying around on my desk!
So it's still great to have it all-in-one.

Mostly school and general mobile device. I am getting my Masters of Science in Management Information Systems so I will need to run windows on parallels (parallels is just my preference but I have ran bootcamp). I run Windows for some different CASE tools, SQL, Access, and MS Project. On OS X I do excel, word, and some steam games like Civ 5 from time to time.

I switched from the 15" MBP to the MBA Ultimate with no problems. Everything runs faster on the MBA.

I did the same. I love the MacBook Air. Even with the high res anti-glare option on my MBP, the pixel density is still the same on the MBA. And comparing the screens, the MBA screen is pretty much perfect, an awesome balance between the "glassy" and the anti-glare. It's glossy, but not too reflective of whats behind you. Colors on it are in my opinion just as good if not better than the MBP I had. :D I'm happy.

I just sold my 15" MBP and got the MBA 13" Ultimate as my sole machine. I am very happy with my decision. The MBA is much faster due to the SSD, epic battery life, thin and more comfortable to use on the couch.

I have a feeling that a lot of 15" people switched :D I haven't had a chance to really push and see what this thing can do just yet, but I'm already loving it.

I sold my original 15" unibody and bought a specced up 11" Air. Got about £900 for the MBP and paid £1030 for the MBA on student discount. I haven't regretted it for a second. I use the Air so much more than I ever used the MBP just 'cause its so easy to cary around and so quick. I do a bit of Autocad and a lot of word and it does both fine.
I've got a Mini Display-port to HDMI cable connected to my LCD-TV and its great for watching internet video.

Add me, I had a 2010 15 with an Intel SSD and the high res matte screen, and I'm still a happy camper having moved to the 13 Air.

Its seems like the consensus is that the switch would be good. I think I might pull the trigger this afternoon or tomorrow morning. (At least on the mba part, I am going to wait on the mac mini or imac to update)

Spec question-

I have the option of getting the 1.86ghz 4gb w/ 128 and 1.86ghz 4gb w/256 at a discount (student discount + another 10% off). Is the 1.86ghz unit good enough? Or should I go through apple to get the faster processor?

I just came across my mind to do the opposite...

For me it was a real hard choice to make decision between the MBA ultimate and the MBP 15inch i5 2010 high ress antiglare... in the end I went for the MBA and I'm really happy with it. The only thing I am concerned of is the MBA's is the resale value is lower than the MBP's...

I put it online for sale couple of days ago and somebody bid 1600 dollars for it... now I am thinking of sell the MBA and go for the new MBP 2011.

Maybe I'm just a decide less Apple whore

I was thinking about getting the high end MBP 2011 15 inch. I then thought to my self, do I REALLY want all that mobile power? Or would I like more power than a MBP at home, and just want I need when I am not at home? I can only imagine how powerful the new iMac or Mac Mini line will be with sandybridge processors.

3 weeks ago, I sold my 17'' MacBook Pro and bought a $1000 gaming computer and a 13'' MacBook Air with 4GB of memory. The MBA runs faster for coding, word processing, and general web browsing than my old MBP ever did. The portability is also truly amazing. The only thing that I did on my old MBP that would be slower on the MBA is gaming, and maybe some heavy Photoshopping. I never really realized how huge and thick my old computer was until I got my MBA. It's so much easier to carry around, and to pull out on the go. The battery life is almost as great as it was on the MBP, which is important to me as a student. And if I ever need a bigger screen, I can plug it into my external monitor. I'm incredibly glad I bought the Air.

I'm considering doing the same.

I find it interesting to see how the screen resolutions have gone up over the years:
  • iMac 17 --> 1440x900
  • MBP 15 --> 1440x900
  • MBA 13 --> 1440x900

So basically, the workspace of a MBA13 is the same as it was for an iMac 17.

Plus, the speed with SSD is awesome.

Question for anyone who regularly uses Parallels or VMware Fusion. What's your experience been like from the MBP15 to MBA13?

Sold my 15" early 08 MBP. Bought the new 13". Love it. Even though I did swap the factory hdd on the 15" with an intel g2 drive, the new air seems faster yet. ofc got 4gb ram tho, and 256gb option.

I disagree with people saying that the screen of the mba is better than the mbp. Black are less black on the mba and the white is kind of yellow on my mba ultimate. Mbp is far better, you really should put the two aside, you'll see :)

The MBA drives even the 27" ACD very well. I think the 13" MBA and LED ACD is the perfect system. Make it ultimate system!

I have had both 24" and 27" LED ACDs, and both models are amazing. Really, the 27" provides better side by side workspace, but the 24" has the same great docking station like capabilities.

I think the MBA is more "pro" than the 13" MBP. However, the 15" MBP is a real professional computer. They provide two different sets of capabilities. You really just need to determine power needed. If running CPU intensive apps all day the 15" may be the route to go. For most the MBA is going to be faster than the MBP because the drive and drive controller are the typical bottleneck in today's computers, and the MBA has a great SSD and software control features. The MBA is so far ahead of everything else out there that I personally think it is the ultimate Mac and nicest system ever when paired with the ACD.

what are your thoughts on the 11 inch mba?

I bought and used both for a few months. I gave the 11" a good effort, but I just didn't care for it. I feel like the display is giving up too much space compared to the 13" MBA. I feel like watching things on it are cramped. Honestly, I like surfing the web better on the iPad than 11" MBA. I don't hate but I don't like the iPad either. However, the 11" fails in comparison to watch movies or surf the web. Typing on the iPad sucks though, so there are downsides to both.

I personally just feel the 13" MBA has absolutely everything one could want and it could easily be a main computer either with its native display or an LED ACD. I feel the 11" MBA doesn't do anything great. I would rather have a 13" MBA and an iPad. I really just use the 13" MBA though. I cannot see any circumstance where the 13" doesn't just blow away the 11" MBA. The 11" isn't that much lighter, thinner, or more mobile. In fact, the 13" provides productive mobility while the 11" feels cramped.

In reality, to me the iPhone 4 beats the iPad because the iPhone is more mobile. However, when comparing the 11" to 13" MBAs the 13" seems to be just as mobile as either requires carrying in a case and either needs space to type and etc. If one can open a 11" MBA in an airline seat and type they can also with the 13". It just isn't beneficial to lose the display size and other qualities like better trackpad, SD card slot, and more space for palm rest and etc. To me the 11" is too close to a netbook. I am not trying to offend people, and I know it isn't a netbook, but it has some of the poor qualities not materials of a netbook.

If someone has a 27" iMac at home, a 15" MBP for mobile productivity, then an 11" MBA might make more sense. But I use my 13" MBA as my primary and truthfully sole Mac, and it is the ultimate in portability while providing desktop space of 15.4" MBP in 13" MBA footprint, and is fast and completely capable without any compromises. In addition, it plugs into a 27" LED ACD and feels like I have a Mac Pro.

I use an MBA for productivity and mobility. The losses from going to an 11" are too great for the tiny difference in mobility advantages. The 13" MBA is a dream Mac. I love it. I use that and an iPhone basically 99% of the time. If I needed to have something as big as an 11" MBA or iPad out it might as well be a much more capable 13" MBA.

Anyone notice the 13" MBA display could almost fit in the 11" MBA by removing the bezel? But you know what after using the 13" MBA I wouldn't want that to happen. The MBA can get lighter weight but it doesn't need a smaller footprint. Carbon fiber might be the next step or liquid metal, but I don't think removing the bezel is the way to go even though I used to champion that position often. The 13" MBA is perfection except maybe a 14.5" or so display in the exact same MBA footprint as the 13" MBA is now... That is the only change I coud dream of except the obvious ones we all talk about. Pair it with a 27" ACD and it's a desktop too. Add an iPhone to your pocket and you have it all covered at home or away and no matter where both can do the job seemingly better than anything else.

Switched from 2010 i7 HiRes 15" MBP, got Ultimate 13" MBA.
In the beginning I was missing 1680x1050 screen I've had for few months.
Now I only "know" that screen could be better on MBA.
But frankly I'm quite happy with it.

But beware you'll get hooked once you go Air - no more Pros will do for you :rolleyes:

So the store section of the company I work for had one optioned out MBA in stock and I got it for 1510 out the door. CRAZY Price! Plus they threw in a free printer and usb cable.

It is pretty nice. Now to get all my stuff on it and sell the MBP! Can't wait for the new iMacs or Mac Minis to roll out.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate under VMware Fusion's Unity mode on my 13 inch Ultimate MBA. I always have a couple of Windows apps running on the OS X desktop, along with 5 or 6 OS X apps. The MBA handles them beautifully, with at least as much speed and stability as my 17 inch 2.4 GHz Santa Rosa MBP did, although the MBP has 6GB of RAM. Highly recommended!
