Hello, Please i dont want any replies about searching for other threads and all that because half the time they are off topic.

I have jailbroken (not unlocked) Iphone generation 1 currently living in the U.S under the AT&T network. I am going to London next month and I wanted to be able to use at least calls local in England, and also to u.s.a, email, possibly text messaging local in london and to u.s.a . Do i need to unlock my phone and how do i go about doing that, and dealing with a sim or what ever when i get to london? Any options?
Also, with the texting, see i can buy the international plan but i dont want my friends from here getting charged international rates to text me there.
Any ideas? would really appreciate it. Im not very familiar with using the phone abroad.

Yes, you need to unlock.

You can find a million threads about unlocking in the iPhone Hacks forum.

Once you're in the UK, you can walk into most mobile shops (or even some convenience stores) and buy a sim card. They're about £5. Then you can do a pay-as-you-go plan on top of that.

first off thanks for the reply

Ok yeah I know how to unlock.
So are you saying, once I get to the country, I can just take my current sim out i have right now, and buy a sim from there and put it on my phone? make calls ? etc?

Yes, the sim will have a new number (a UK number) attached to it and you'll automatically switch over to that.

The data part if more complicated, but it sounds like you're just interested in making phone calls, so you should be fine.

texts

thanks for that, how would i go about if i wanted to make texts to the U.S.A?

You would e-mail your friend's carrier's e-mail/SMS gateway and send/receive texts internationally for free.

Alternatively, you could send them through the SMS app and pay a small fortune to your mobile provider. (> £0.20 a message for some carriers.)
