I'm heading to Mazatlan pretty soon and a now thinking about how the iPhone will fare while I'm out and about. I have a few questions, one involves jailbreaking, the other "doesn't". Please bare with me, lol.
1. I've read to turn off data roaming and not answer your phone, to put it in airplane mode, etc. I don't plan to make any calls unless the second question gets answered. Considering I'll be making no calls, I still need the ability to use GPS. I will be pre-loading maps, so the data transfer is a non issue, but airplane mode kills GPS. Is there a way to kill everything but wifi and GPS? I don't need anything else. jailbreak apps are okay as I'm currently jailbroken at 3.1.2 with my 3Gs

2. I don't NEED to make any calls while in Mexico, but it might be kind of nice if the price is reasonable. I was thinking I could unlock my phone and just buy a prepaid SIM while I'm there. The most I'll need is 15-30 minutes worth of talking. No texts, no data, no voicemail. Any suggestions on what to do and where to buy it? Or is a prepaid phone a better option? And will there be a way to kill data transfer once using that SIM?

So yeah, kind of going several ways as I'm not really sure of my options and which route I should take. Any help would be great, thanks!

ahhhhhh, locations services? I see that now, duh. I'll test this out a little tomorrow and see what happens. I'd still like to hear anyones opinions on prepaid SIM cards while I'm down there if anyone has anything to add

If you unlock, any prepaid SIM will do fine. There is no advantage/need to get another phone. You don't need to worry about using data either. Unless you buy a SIM that is specifically for data, or call the Mexican providor of the SIM and ask to have data turned on, the SIM will be for calls only.

So I did a test today with the location services turned on, airplane mode on and my location was not being updated at all.
Any other suggestions?

By the way, I've messed with bossprefs, data toggle and while they do seem to kill data transfer, they're killing the GPS as well.

ummmmmmm, duh!
Okay, so that makes perfect sense. I just tried it out and my GPS still works great, everything that I cached still works as I move along the map. I'll let me girlfriend deal with making calls, lol.

thanks man, appreciate it, though I'm not sure why I didn't think of it quicker :)
