Well I just got to ok to go and get either a iBook or iMac from my parents. Any advice on which one/ what to do first? Woot im excited!

iMac or iBook depends on how mobile you want to be and what you want to do with your computer. I am lucky enough to own both but if I had to choose just one, then the iBook would be the winner. I use it for work and I travel extensively.

I'm also lucky enough to have both. I'd go the iBook because it's powerful enough, it's cute and it's portable. The iMac is quite significantly faster but that's only relevant when converting music in iTunes or using Garageband or iMovie for me.

I have the new iMac (well month old I guess) and it's great for doing my home movies etc on, but there are times I would like an OSX based portable, so I'm toying with the idea of an iBook as well some time in the next couple of months.
You could upgrade the size of hard-drive with the Black Friday savings.

The 17"WS iMac is by far a better system over all, with the faster 1.9GHz 64 bit G5 processor, larger and faster 7200 RPM HD's , much better 128 MB of VRAM in the much improved PCI-express GPU and far better screen resolution and contrast ratio's as well as video conferencing capabilities with the built in iSight.
Even though the iBook is a great little portable, it does have it's limitations.
I would get the iMac G5 for now as your primary desktop, then save up for
a refurbed 1.33 GHz 12" iBook.

Well right now im typing on my new iBook!
Im excited i opted for the iBook becuase I wanted to use it in my basement as well as in my bed room. This is great! I just got done installing all the updates and now im going to find so killer apps. Thanks for the help!

I got the basic 12 inch
1.33 Ghz
512 ram (which should be getting an upgrade soon)
40 Gig drive (sorta the only thing im semi dissapointed on)
Combo, Bluetooth, AirPort
I would post pics but I just have a camera phone... but i probobly will anyways

Just wait until AppleCare runs out and CRACK THAT BABY OPEN!!
As long as you're happy with your purchase and it does what you need it to do that's all anyone can expect.
Remember to burn all those update .pkg's ( packages ) to CD
so you can quickly bring your system back up to date if necessary.
The same goes for copies of your installers and their associated
authorization numbers.
I know you're content with your purchase, but since the iBook has such
limited HD space, it's a good idea to re-install the OS custom, deselecting
all the extra printer drivers, language translators, software demos, iDVD themes and Gargeband demo songs.
Doing this frees up 4.7+ GB off your HD leaving you much more room for
your Applications and data storage.
If you click on the HD icon on your desktop and control click selecting get info, yo'll see that you don't have very much room to spare.

FFTT Thanks for the advice im going to do that later today.
One question I do have is how to install programs. I have looked through the fourms/ guides and I have installed a few programs sussesfuly but when I try to install the free demo of Photoshop Elements it says

The Mac Beginner's Guide should answer most of your questions. The link is in my sig. And congrats to your purchase.
Installing programs is very easy.
But, as mentioned above, you'll need Stuffit Expander to unstuff any compressed folders you download off the web.
Most Applications either have a built-in installer or you simply drag and drop the installer Icon to your Applications folder.

Some installs require a full restart others only require logging back in.
Then with some, you'll need to authorize the application the next time you open it.

FFTT I tried to do a clean install today but I seem to have not seen the step about where you choose "cutom" install. Is it near where you choose clean instal.

After you start the installer there should be an option button that open's
the contents of your choices.
Forgive me I'm trying to remember exactly where it shows up but it's in the starting stages of the installation.
There's an Arrow that you click to show what is in each catagory,
then each option within that catagory has a check box.

I did this today and my OS X takes 5.xG instead of 12.xG . This took about 2 hours to do and saved me lots of valuable space on my 40G HDD. I actually did this because of this thread!

FFTT Wow you are a life saver... well sorta .I will do a clean install correctly tommorw when I wake up thanks for all the help.

stuff there is that you'll never miss, it makes it worth the effort.
