Honestly I think it shouldn't really matter- it should be more about what they represent than whether or not the medals are actually made of gold. But this one quote amused me.

Michael Phelps, on the medals being made of gold: "I am very, very concerned about my extensive contact with gold medals," Mr. Phelps told reporters. "But what am I supposed to do? Stop being so awesome?"

haha honestly I only read to the "quote" from Phelps. Short attention span I guess :p

Just finished the article though, pretty amusing especially if you've been following the controversies of these games... I feel silly

I'm still amazed that people don't recognize satire when they see it.

This article is soooo absurd that I can't imagine taking it seriously, but several co-workers believed it when it got sent around my office yesterday.

At my high school we had a teacher who went to great lengths to teach us about satire, and I guess maybe others just never got exposed to it?

That's article's pretty funny. I bet the Olympic medals are made in China though, especially this year, but hopefully they don't have those tacky little gold stickers on them touting "Made in China."

Beijing Medal Composition

The IOC has strict stipulation on the Olympic medals' material, identification, weight, size and drawing. The medals for the champion and the runner-up are made of pure silver, and the champion's medal must be plated with gold weighing not less than six grams each. For the first time jade is used for the Olympic medals. The design not only meets the IOC requirements, but also expresses praise and honor that the Chinese people cherish for the Olympic Spirit and the Olympic athletes.

Yes, it's really made of gold. With a GPS tracker on it.
and a few months after the Olympics, gold medal winners start disappearing mysteriously, all part of Dr Evil's plan, to conquer the world with superhuman athletes.

all in exchange of ... muhahaha 1 MILLION DOLLARS

i think it's cool it's got the half gold front, half jade back. hopefully other olympic cities can add their own flavor to future medals

That was a funny article "In other Olympic news, China's hopes for winning more medals in women's gymnastics were dashed when one of their leading gymnasts vanished down a bathtub drain on Tuesday." :D

P.S. In other other Olympic h/rumours...
