i use lightwave for school and have found it really easy to use and really easy to learn. i dont know about how its advanced features compare to other programs though.

Blender, although I haven't used it too extensively seem fairly easy to use. Plus it's free. Thats always nice.

Blender is free and is widely used so there are a lot of good tutorials for it. I can't honestly say that it's easy to use though. It has a very unusual user interface and a steep learning curve. However, it's very powerful, so once you learn it, you can do all kinds of things with it.

wings3d is a fun little piece of freeware, very intuitive, 3d subdivision-modeller. Very easy to learn. And very good at the few things it can.

ZBrush is an app some of my friends are raving about. And they have a rather extensive demo as a free download. The way it works is quite different from anything else I know.

blender as mentioned.

Then apps like Strata, FormZ, Cinema4D, Maya... But they all cost (big amounts of) money.

Yes, I agree Zbrush is the most amazing 3D program out there. It's so much more than a simple 3D it's also 2D and 2.5D. Very easy to do stuff imediately and they have the best support of any program anywhere on earth.

They have recently released their latest version in demo form.
