Good bye Mighty Mouse

I finally had to replace my (wired) Mighty Mouse. I have had my Mac for about a month now so I feel that's a fair test. Even with Steermouse installed, the Mighy Mouse has been a mighty disappointment. Without Steermouse installed (out-of-the-box) the mouse is barely useable , IMO. In order to traverse from one side of my 24" screen to the other, I had to pick it up halfway to start over - even with the speed set at max. The scroll ball was excellent, but the main function of any mouse is to point at stuff. And if the stuff I want to point to was too far away, constantly picking up the mouse to reset for another swipe is just not cutting it. At least, not in today's world of excellent laser mice.
I installed a Logitech MX400 and it is great. Apple neeeds to look at their mouse technology - it's lagging behind.

You must have very short arms. :D I can reach anywhere on my 30" with a flick of the wrist. I don't know what steermouse is maybe that was the problem?
 
Yeah, I also have no idea what you're talking about. I don't have anything like the problem you describe, just using the mouse out of the box without any weird 3rd party software.

I have the BT Mighty Mouse and my only beef with it is that the scroll ball is almost impossible to maintain.

I was actually hoping the new BT keyboard was going to include a laptop-style touchpad. Two-finger scrolling on my MacBook rocks. I want to have it on all my computers now.
 
Get a Logitech mouse. I have a wireless Logitech mouse, matches real well with my MBP, and is possibly the best mouse I have ever used (and I've used lots of mouses).

Who are you talking to? The OP just said he already bought a Logitech, and I'm happy with my Mighty Mouse until somebody comes up with a good BT keyboard/trackpad combo for me.
 
system preferences > kboard and mouse > mouse > tracking

set it to a faster tracking speed and it will be fine.

edit * i see now you already bought a different mouse. o well you wasted money then *

Gimme a little credit. I did that about 15 minutes after I unboxed the iMac. It didn't work. It increased the sensitivy, but not nearly enough. I even said so in my original post. But, it sounds like maybe my mouse was defective? Oh well, the Logitech is superb.

That'd be my guess. I have a very small area on which to use my Mighty Mouse, and with the tracking speed cranked up, I have no problems making it from one corner to the other of my 24" iMac.

I do. The MM stinks and I experienced the same thing as the OP. With tracking speed set to the max, the pointer moves too slowly for the 24" screen.

To the OP, good call on the MX400. I went the same route and it is excellent. The laser makes a huge difference in pointing precision.

It's amazing to me that Apple can make such fine computers, at the same time they make such God-awful mice (the keyboards are pretty good). They need to step it up there.

I do not think too much of the mighty mouse. I prefer Microsofts mice. I find them to be of good quality and easy on the hands. Apple needs to take two buttons seriously and accept the standard. A two button trackpad would be nice on the laptops as well.
 
I use that MX400 too, but only because it's a laser mouse. The Mighty Mouse doesn't work on my glossy, white desk. If there only was a wired laser version of the MM, I'm sure as hell not spending 70 bucks on a mouse which needs batteries too from time to time.
 
i was first excited when i heard about the wireless MM, but when i actually tried one in a store i hated it. its that universal design for the mouse that fits alright into a left or right hand, but not like a glove for either. i picked up the logitech revolution mouse, and never looked back.

You must have the greasiest, dustiest fingers known to man then. The scroll all is NOT hard to maintain on the Wireless MM. if you read the cleaning instructions, it is actually very easy to maintain.

to the OP, its really your loss man as the MM is an excellent mouse. People love to bash this thing and I can only think its because they cannot open their mind to a different design that has, at least, the same functionality as a "PC" mouse...

Logitech Rocks. Been using my Logitech DiNova Desktop and Media pad for years on PC's and love it. Next month it will see it's new i-Mac and my first Mac PC YEA!!!!!!! Buh-bye Bill, I've had enough of testing your OS'es for you:p:D:apple:
 
I've had this problem before with a 3rd party mouse. One would work fine while the other would move so slow across the screen even with the tracking turned all the way up. I downloaded USB overdrive I think it was called and set the tracking speed with that which made the tracking faster. Not sure why it was needed in the first place but it fixed the problem.
 
I love the MM, I have a wireless one & I love the invisible right-button, I think it's good. I also much prefer only having 1 button clickers on the MB/P's, my last laptop had the norm 2 buttons & a 5 way square button thing (Acer), I like that you can just push anywhere & get a click on these, it's so lazy :D.

I haven't had any probs with the scroll ball either, & while I've never tried a logitech mouse, I don't see any need to, I love my MM.
 
I partly agree with the OP. I ordered my 24" with a wireless MM. It felt awkward for me. I don't mean the way it fitted in my hand, because that I could get used to. But the way the pointer responded to the mouse moves was.. "bumpy", in lack of a better term.. Of course, I fiddled endlessly with the mouse settings.

I used the MM for about a week or so, and then I equipped my good old trusty Logitech MX510 (blue.. :)). That sure did help a lot, but the pointer still didn't feel smooth enough for me. After some time, I discovered SteerMouse. THAT helped!! :D

A lot of people disagree with this, I'm sure. But Apple should buy SteerMouse and implement it directly into OS X..
 
There is a command you can run in terminal that will allow you to turn the tracking speed up even higher than what's possible in system preferences. I was having a hard time with the max tracking speed on my 24". But now I LOVE my bluetooth mighty mouse...I don't have the command line in front of my but a quick google should help find it...I think it was on the macworld site

I do not like the MM and that is not for it's design which in fact is really looking nice. But from an ergonomic point of view the design is suboptimal. At least it was for me. And for the wired mouse I had the same problem as the OP. Everyone that EVER used a Logitech Laser mouse think that the MM feels like brick. On my MX Revolution I can go all my 3840*1200 pixels from the bottom right to the top left without having the mouse leaving the boundaries of a regular 20cm*17cm mousepad AND having a extremly high accuracy.
 
I have a feeling there is some differences between the two types of Mighty Mice(?) and tracking. The bluetooth mighty mouse has laser tracking while the corded version doesn't. That's probably why you were having those troubles. Mine's BT and it flies across my 24" if I barely move a couple inches. Sad you didn't give the BT version a chance... :(
 
But this only hold true for the latest BT MM or? Because I played with the one of my father and it is the same sensor as in my wired one. Probably 5 month old model.
