Good candidate for iMac Intel 24' memory upgrade?

Any help would be great, I was also worried SATA 3.0 might not work in the iMac.

Should be fine. SATA/300 is backwards compatible with SATA/150 and the difference in (theoretical) bandwidth is meaningless for single drives in any case.

The sata bus was upped from 1.5 gbps in the white Intel iMac to 3.0 gbps in the aluminum iMacs
