I've had plenty of good luck with Data Rescue in the past, but I haven't had to use any "real" data-recovery software in probably 5 years now! The reduced cost of backup drives, online backups, move to SSDs and so on means that I haven't had to recover data from an actual, unmountable, drive in, well, just about forever. Generally I just used CCC to aggressively re-try copies and manage to clone all, or nearly all, data off of failing drives that way.

Finally presented with two drives that people thought were safe because they were "backup drives" (a very, very bad way to market external drives, as it leads the average joe or jane to believe that these devices are somehow more reliable), plus a failed USB thumb drive (when it rains!)

Before I spring for the latest update to Data Rescue I thought I would ask for people's experiences with data-recovery software now that it 2019. Data Rescue still the way to go, or should I be looking at other products like Disk Drill? Anyone think there is a product that really stands out above the rest?
