Good deal for TB external?

I saw a Buffalo DriveStation mini Thunderbolt raid 1TB for $600 on OWC... which is way below the regular asking price of like $1000. Anybody think this is a good deal? Or have new drives supplanted it at this price point? I'm seeing great speed tests and I assume it will be quieter than a spinning HD to complement my silent nMP...
 
You can probably find better deals, but whatever you buy make sure its a good company

Centralcomputers.com has 2TB drives for sale at $76. $600 for half that space doesn't seem to be a "deal".

These are dual SSDs in a TB enclosure. The $600 is more so paying for speed and low latency .... not raw capacity. A single 2TB rotational drive isn't going to be in the same time zone outside the capacity dimension.

There may be something "odd" about the SSDs in here. Two 500GB SSDs should be close to $500 all by themselves. But yes the original price point was likely when 500GB cost substantially more. The fall in their prices has lead to most of the fall in this drive enclosure's price. The drop to $599 may be just to dump the inventory from the books so can refresh with the next generation.

One "stale" indicator is that these are Thunderbolt v 1 drives in RAID. TB v1 is actually holding this back if the individual SSDs can get close to their 6Gb/s limit. TB v2 enclosures variants are becoming more widespread which means OWC might get stuck with the inventory .... hence "get it off the shelf now" pricing.

That doesn't mean this set-up isn't good enough to get work done with. It just isn't bleeding edge anymore.
