Hey my friend will sell me his G5, an apple lcd (17 or 20 inch, i cant remember), 2 external 120gb hard drives, and final cut pro for $1200. Is this a good deal or should I invest in an intel imac?

I am really into video production, so I really want a mac.

What should i do?

pretty good deal if it is ( which i think it a POWERMAC)... BUT maybe you can just buy the 20"/17" (hopefully widescreen) monitor and buy a MAC PRO.

personally, I'm not too into buying a computer if there is a newer (faster) model out!

but then again that bitch is $2499, i say if money is an issue get teh G5 hopefully it is dual core and load that baby with ram, you probably wont be able to tell a difference.

let us know!

Yeah, im a high school senior, with no job lol, and budget is an issue. This just seems pretty cheap. Anybody know if leopard will run on power pc?

Leopard will definitely run on a PowerMac G5. Heck, Apple is even saying it'll still run on G3's. And as for the deal, that's a hell of a deal considering you're looking at well over $3000 for all those if they were new. All that for $1200, I'd say go for it unless there are some features on an Intel Mac that you explicitly need, like the ability to run Windows natively.

Just as an aside, Apple removed the text that said that Leopard will run on G3s. Tiger and even Panther don't run on all G3s...there are other hardware requirements that rule out some machines. So we don't really know enough to say what level of machine will be required for Leopard yet.

I don't know, but I think I'd get a 17 inch Core Duo iMac at that price. Still, that's a really good price on the g5

The intel macs are much faster then the powermacs, if i was in your shoes i would rather save and pay more for the faster ones.
