A guy on the [facebook] marketplace has an iPad gen 3 256gb, unknown brand case, and pencil (2nd gen) for $900. I will be upgrading from a first generation, but don't know if its best to just purchase the 2020 version. I do a little procreate drawing and work related things, beyond reading research articles and whatnot. Thanks for any advice and support.

I'm thinking you might mean an iPad Pro third gen 12.9" that was released in 2018. I've got one that I bought from the Apple Refurb Store in May and I love it. It's fast and the screen is great. $900 seems like a decent price for the iPP and the Pencil, but you may want to research a bit on Best Buy, Amazon and some of the other resellers to find out what the new 2018 (that are still being sold) are going for to compare. Buying the deal you're considering won't have the one-year warranty and I assume no Applecare+. Also check Swappa.com to compare used prices for the same config.

B&H video has a brand new (2018) 12.9” Wifi model 256GB for $929. Unless the marketplace seller is willing to come down a good bit, I would buy brand new for the $30 extra.

Edited to add: This is an even better deal from B&H

And once you're up in that range, it's not a very far jump to $1099 for the 2020 12.9 256GB. Of course adding the pencil would be more. Even so, buying a new 2018 is a better deal for the warranty and Applecare+ if you're inclined. There were in the last 3 days Pencil 2 in the refurb store for $109, but that version is gone for now.
