MacTheRipper to get the DVD onto your harddrive, and Handbrake to compress it to a more respecatable size.

Shouldn't someone sticky the answer to this question as it gets asked time and time again?

freeware for burning

I would use mac the ripper.

Is there freeware for putting/burning it on a single layer DVD+R after using MTR?

I've heard of Nero's toast and others that cost $$, but not sure about freeware. I guess I could always get bootcamp and use windows - there are a plethora of programs out there for windows. thanks for any advice.

I prefer using 0SEx to rip DVDs. I like how it rips the DVDs to a single .vob file and not in 1gb segments. Lot easier to encode a single file then multiple.

I also second mac the ripper. To convert files from dvd vob format to like avi or mp4 I use VisualHub. It's much faster than handbrake IMO. For burning I use dragon burn, a simple burn program called Burn (freeware you can find it on versiontracker) or Toast.
