Good News - DVI - HDMI On Mac Mini

Hi

I have been looking around the forums for info on how to setup a mac mini with a HDTV Plasma. (There is definitely opportunity for someone to write a definitive article on this BTW, the articles on Macworld are not that great).

Anyway - I have noticed that a new company http://www.XtremeMac.com/
will from February be producing DVI - HDMI cables relatively cheaply circa £20.00.

I sent them a question about Mac Mini and HDTV compatability and they replied back with this:
If the Mini has a DVI then it will work.

Um, there are already manufacturers that sell DVI to HDMI cables for $10 USD, so...

And, if it has an HDMI in, it'll work with the Mini. That's the point of standards.

Yes, there are lots of posts on the net about people having trouble getting HDTVs to play with Macs... has nothing to do with the cable. It almost always has to do with the TV and the video card speaking the same language in terms of defining the screen resolution.

Well, not my fault if they can't get their crap together. That's pretty miserable that an HDTV, designed to run at two or three resolutions, has trouble reporting those resolutions to a computer over a digital display standard that's allowed that for years and years now.

Point taken, but still, minus ten points for TV manufacturers. Amateurs.

I think the MacMini is a major factor in this equation. There are many computer LCD monitors with DVI inputs that work fine except when hooked up to a MacMini. There is a website with a table somewhere. I can't find it on Google right now, but the percentage of non-compatible monitors was surprisingly high. I have a new 21" Samsung LCD monitor hooked up through the analog VGA adapter to my MacMini because it doesn't work in DVI mode.
