While most of us are a little disappointed (to put it mildly) about the screen flickering, blobs etc. etc. surely something good will come from all this.

And here it is!!!

All these units being replaced and exchanged are going back to you know where? The Apple Refurb Depot.

So ultimately, the patient Hawks can swoop down on the reconditioned iMacs at huge refurb discount prices very very soon. And yes there will be quite a few of them when you consider how many have been sold/returned around the world.

NO ONE, I repeat NO ONE should have to "settle" for sub-standard engineering when you are paying $2,000 and buying the best computer in the world from a cult-niche company like Apple.

Obviously, Apple did not test all the configurations intensively enough. Major PR blunder.

Shame.

My thoughts exactly, thusly my MacBook Pro will be arriving promptly in order to replace my defective MacBook Aluminum. Careful with a word like "blobs", it can catch people off guard from the corner of their eye.

I Hope Your Comment Isn't Serious

So enlighten us, what's the problem?

Just check the 3 page thread above this one called The IMac Display Problem.

Here is a little quote from it:

Hey All,
This display issue is a real issue. It is a hardware issue. Mine was flickering no matter what I did. Also half my pixels came dead. I was really angry, but apple replaced my 27 inch imac. The new one has dust under the screen.

Thanks Steve Jobs.

Were you saying what problem? Yeah must be just a bunch of fluff in the air.;)

Mine's perfect, no display issues at all. Just a grumbling 1TB hard drive.

I don't think it's fair to say there is not a problem because obviously some people are having issues. Of course it may be a minority, but people expect things to work when they pay the price they do for these units.

As for my 27" I don't believe I had any of the pre-10.6.2 update issues, but I also never had airport turned on which seemed to be part of the issue. I did however last week get a weird issue while watching a PBS documentary online where after about 20 minutes the entire screen shifted horizontally so basically the dock was about 1/4 of the way down the screen from the top. Imagine how the old tv's had the horizontal adjustment, thats what it was like.

I havent watched any more videos online, so I don't know if it's an ongoing issue or not.

It's basically as soon as people return them.

Warning: I ordered a G5 white 24 inch refurb years ago and it arrived with dried coffee splashes/droplets all over the screen.

Apple tells you how thoroughly inspected each machine is refurbed but mine literally was returned and a new shipping label applied with my name on it.

It went right back, naturally.

That was scary.

27" iMac i7 absolutely perfect

Just got my iMac 27" i7 today and I have to say I was a little scared with all of the screen issues floating around. Well, I have been using it for a few hours and absolutely no problems at all. No flickering, no black outs, no dead pixels, no hard drive noise, just pure perfection. Perhaps this is a second round of manufacturing that has worked out the kinks. I also have to say this thing is beautiful and fast. Couldn't be happier with the purchase.:)

Thanks for the reply. Could you please take the POLL:

POLL: Does Your 27 inch iMac Have a Screen Problem?

Let's see if all new 27 inch iMacs are affected.

Take the poll below:

http://www.acepolls.com/polls/105869...screen-problem

After taking the POLL, please kindly reply to the

"POLL: Does Your 27 inch iMac Have a Screen Problem? " thread

with the listing of your machine. i5 or i7.

solman,

The examples you posted are most likely defects -- one in five-thousand units that are bad. (my numbers may not be correct, just posting them for hypothetical discussion) And unfortunately, to a certain degree, some folks will get online and blow their problem out of proportion. They may have a few dead pixels, but then they post "dozens" or "hundreds" which is often time untrue.

Please don't get me wrong: it totally sucks to find something wrong with your machine and one should absolutely return it. I am also thankful that Apple has one of the best customer service departments in the world. But the title and nature of your thread makes it sound like there is a widespread problem when in reality there is not. I can assure you there are thousands of perfect iMacs for every one that has a problem.

Hi Bryan,

Thanks for your comment and likely true. With the sheer numbers of screen problem returns documented here, I and am sure others, got cold feet going into a 2 grand purchase that "could" come back like a boomerang. This is a natural fear any consumer would have.

Now is all the posting by various people with 27 inch display problems "overblown hype" or is it genuinely and unusually a high proportion of manufacturing defects/engineering miscalculations? Naturally we don't really know.

And that is what we are really doing here. Ground level gathering of research to validate or invalidate our purchase fears of a 27 inch iMac.

In support of the theory that there "is" a display problem, let's not forget about the automobile world. All the Consumer Reports Reliability Surveys clearly show problems in 1st year new models for "every"manufacturer in the world.

So maybe this 27 inch iMac computer could have "new model" "1st year" glitches.

And a simple POLL may shed some light on that, however small it may be.

Dude I know you mean well but please do some research on research first. Your arguments are fallacious, your poll is biased and unscientific. If you continue to post on this topic I will continue to debunk you.
For example, in the quote about, you say "in support of the theory that there is a display problem", some other products exhibit "new model" syndrome. Sorry, but that doesn't 'support' the theory. There is no reason to tar iMacs with the same brush as cars, for example. Now, Apple products have been known to exhibit this syndrome, so you would have been better citing that. However, again, it doesn't prove anything. It only proves that it is not impossible for this to be the case, which was never in doubt.

As for the poll itself, I leave that discussion to the appropriate thread ;)

Actually if you search through the forums here you will find that its not a myth that Apple Rev A products suffer from glitches. If you have been with Apple for a long time, its a known fact that if you wait for Rev B you are getting an improved product. If you are lucky the issues can be fixed with a patch or a firmware upgrade. There are issues with the Current 27 Imac displays, the one in the Apple shop near to where I work flickers (not sure why they have not replaced it yet). I have ordered one and hope it is not effected. From my experience the only computer that I have not had to return due to defects has been an mini, and i have own 5 currently, so lets not BS ourselves about quality control.

Shame.

This is not good news! I cannot see how a refurb with a flickering screen is good news for someone that saves x amount. These should not hit the refurb shop till they are corrected. The question does apple actually look into the faults or just resells them. They would fix the DOA models but not sure about the ones that have intermittent issues.

Though no company is perfect and immune to fault, not even apple.

Apple refurbs have come a long way since then I guess....I've ordered 3 refurb ipods, a Mac Mini, and early 2009 iMac and you couldn't tell them from new except for the plain cardboard box they came in.

I know, and I said as much in my post. I said that the OP should have been citing that rather than some obscure car reference. But that doesn't prove anything, other than it is not impossible and has been known to happen.

By the way, in case anyone hasn't realised, the original post is a troll. Since we're using fallacies, what does that say about his credibility as an impartial pollster?

Um...am I the only one that realizes Apple makes sure refurbs are free from reported issues before allowing them to be resold?

If you had a defective battery in an iPod and sent it in and received a replacement, the defective one will receive a new battery.

It's such a shame that the above poster refuses to accept a helpful, informal discussion such as this. His post that all these "unfortunate people" with a display problem are just insignificant samples of the world population of 27 inch imac owners, and all our talk and discussion is meaningless!

I would say he is a troll trying to belittle what seems to be quite a valid concern and issue since the 27 inch release.
