Hi! I have been using TDK DVD-R disks over the last few years, and recently they stopped working in my Aluminum 20" iMac. I found some random disk from Moserbaer (Indian company) that work fine and my super high end Sony DVD-RW work great. From these forums, I learned about the cheap drives Apple uses. When I insert a TDK, it makes weird noises as if its trying to read it then spits it out after about 15 seconds. Can someone tell me what are the cheapest decent quality discs that will work with my iMac? Thanks in advance!

You might want to hop over to cdrfreaks, they are a great site, people are very evangelical on there about the taiyo yuden discs, so that might be the way for you to go.

+1 Taiyo Yuden. I've burned several thousand of them in a DVD duplicator at work, and I can't recall any coasters. I buy them here:

We do old school distance learning - record the classes and mail out the DVDs :) Too many people bitched about broadband as a pre-requisite. The discs have been mailed out to hundreds of people, no compatibility issues with the variety of hardware they're being viewed on.

If I am not mistaken Imation disks are made by taiyo yuden. I am pretty sure I read that somewhere and they are made in Taiwan.

Ritek baby. Best bang for the buck. You can get better quality depending on the cost per cd. Take a look at www.meritline.com I use to buy all my media there when I use to burn a lot of stuff back in the day. They sell trial packs that consists of multiple media types to see which one you prefer.

I have always hear TY was the way to go. . . . . then i tried them. They are awesome if they stay with a computer, but using them to play in standalone dvd players etc, was a waste. Sorry to the TY fans out there -1 for compatibility.
Verbatim+1 for a good all around affordable media.

Edit: my cake box of TY is about 2 years old and not consumed yet (not in forseeable future either) would be a good candidate of my local freecycle group.
I will give TY the benefit of the doubt as saying things have progressed since then, but I am more or less committed to Verbatim now as my preferred choice.

I've been burning Sony 8x or Sony 16x DVD-R for as long as each was available, burned them in many many different burners too, never had a problem. They are cheap (less than $25 for 100 pretty often at Staples) and don't have some stupid ass design/logo on them, they are very plain and look good.

Well thanks for all the replies guys! If what the poster said about Imation being made by TY then that's sort of good for me because I have a lot of Imation CD's, but unfortunately not DVD's. I have tried Sony (got a few expensive DVD RW's) and they worked great, even after being rewritten several times. TDK is the one I have a problem with. I'll have to check out Ritek. Thanks again for all the help!

Sony, Phillips, and Memorex have all been good to me. Basically, you do well not to get the cheapest on the shelf.
