I have a 5 year old 2012 i7 Mac Mini with a 16GB Crucial RAM upgrade. The past year or so I have used an external Samsung SSD as the boot drive running Sierra (with no plans to upgrade).

So is now the best time to sell, with the idea of replacing it with a 2018 model? If so, I'd appreciate help with the price. I'll be listing it on CraigsList. I will hang onto the SSD. My primary goal (natch. . .) is to obtain enough $ to be able to convince my wife that it's better to upgrade now than wait while the resale price of the 2012 goes down.

Yes, now is a good time to sell the 2012 Mac Mini. I sold my 2.3Ghz quad core with 16GB RAM recently on OfferUp for 450$. The buyer had his own SSD, and he was happy that I was able to add it inside the Mini along with the original HDD. I did see listings ranging from 400$ up to 500$, so found 450$ to be a fair price. Good luck!

Probably a good time to sell the 2012 if you are interested in replacing it with a 2018.
I took your comment about convincing you’re wife with a bit of humor and understanding. Certainly not worth commenting about who makes money or works in your family. F’ing internet...

Just to add I just sold my 2012 dual core i5 for $400. It had 16gb RAM and SSD upgrades.

I was more than happy with that price considering I paid $500 for it 6 years ago.

Many thanks for all of the replies. The pricing info is just what I needed and it's in the range I was expecting.

My wife and I just celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary/35 years together. You don't stay happy and together that long without sharing the financial decisions. . . I used to be a paralegal specializing in family law (mainly divorces) and in my 64 years I've seen a lot of relationships tank over money. My non-techie 71 year old wife is a typically frugal Scandinavian who believes in using big-ticket items until they die from old age. But she appreciates that I am the resident tech person; she tells me if she wasn't married to me she wouldn't even own a computer much less an iPhone. LOL (She loves her MBP.) I always let her know when I start thinking about a significant purchase as it's just as much her money as mine. She has a good head on her shoulders and I always appreciate hearing her point of view, whatever the subject may be. In the end she leaves it up to me to decide when it's time to upgrade one of our tech devices.

BTW, I received a forum email regarding a snarky comment from "FilmIndustryGuy" which appears to have been deleted. I wish him luck in his relationships with women because Gawd Knows he is going to need it.

Better time to sell was two months ago, but you cannot predict what apple's gonna do. Sell it ASAP. Around here, these used to go for 500-600€ and now nobody is buying them anymore. Sell it before used 2018 models pop up.

I also have a 2012 i7 2.6ghz quad mini that I only use for audio and video editing. Mine also boots from an external 1TB Samsung T3 SSD. I'm keeping it - still meets my needs for the present time and I'm not sure that another mini would be what I'd want for an upgrade anyway. But I agree, you already missed the best time to sell.

Aren't there two sides to that coin? If you wait, you could buy a used 2018 mini and perhaps the price drop there would be similar to the drop in the value of your 2012 quad? :) Is there some specific reason why you need a 2018 Mini? Personally, I am going to wait until I really need a new computer and not base my decision on the few bucks difference in resale value.

Technically, I am keeping mine, too. My father had said his 2009 is pretty done. He can take the 2012 QC and I’ll grab a new one.
If you can sell for a good amount or if you know someone that could benefit from your 2012, it makes great sense. Otherwise, I’m stil happy to use my 2012 a bit longer if I needed to

I sold my well-cared late 2009 mini (C2D, 2.53, 8GB ram, 500 GB SSD) on ebay for $150, intending to buy a 2018 i5 mini. After checking all the threads mentioning issues (coil whine, bluetooth issues etc.), I instead bought a late 2012 i7 mini (2.3, 16GB ram, 480 GB SSD) for $550 on ebay. Supposedly in excellent condition, but I guess I paid a little too much.

If you were happy with the price then you paid the right amount.

Finally sold my 2011 Mini a few weeks ago, I had been meaning to get around to it for 6+ months. I do think prices softened as it went to Vintage Status ($300 for i7 2.7, 16GB, brand new 512GB 850 Pro, All packaging & History). Not really a big worry though - I'v got about a half dozen more PCs (some specialized) to clean up and find homes for.
