I thought this video by Veritasium about planned and dynamic obsolescence was very interesting. They made it a year or so ago, but I just saw it, and I thought I’d post it here as seems very relevant to us in these forums. The dynamic obsolescence (I never heard this term before) part was particularly intriguing to me. He talks about Apple in the latter part of the video, but I think the whole 16 min video on the history of planned/dynamic obsolescence is worth watching, as it helps give us good perspective.
(Not sure with how much certainty all the information in the video can be substantiated, but the channel is pretty well established.)
Edit- A lot of accusations fly against companies, especially Apple. I’m not one for conspiracy theories, but I also don’t ever discount greed and self-preservation. I do think most bigger companies are guilty to some extent, but as to which specific accusations are true and which are over the top, I personally refrain from making judgment until I encounter an issue and do the research. So far, I haven’t made it to the second step.
