I was mistaken, I thought it was a different video. In now watching that, I agree with much he has. 3:30 into the video, he mentions how great the keyboard and I agree wholeheartedly.

I think at this point Apple is successful simply because of its reputation from prior models, many people are seeing that they're not as good as they used too and while I don't believe they're doomed, I do wonder if the bloom is of the rose so to speak.

I agree with him wholeheartedly about the keyboard as well. The Thinkpad keyboard is as good a keyboard as Apples trackpad is as good a trackpad. If someone could combine the experience of the two, it would be interface nirvana :)

Using the 2018 MBP keyboard as a daily driver, I am shocked by the love it gets from some users, but everyone has their preferences. But preferences aside, I have a feeling that the silicone barrier has maybe created more problems than it has solved. Videos like this (and his prior one about the MBA keyboard failure) and experiences relayed by MR users, give me the impression that perhaps the 2018 is the most problematic of them all, rather than the fixed version we had hoped for. I have had issues with the keyboards on 2 2018 MBP's myself. One more widespread and affecting several keys, not just the "e" key.

He does make good points. For those more value oriented. They should look at the Lenovo Ideapad 720s and 730s. Both are excellent ultralight models with superb battery life, nice screen, no odd button placement, thin, light, Thunderbolt 3, SSD all that with a much faster CPU than the MBA.

The 730s is the updated model. It has only USB C and shed some weight but the 720s is still excellent.

Personally, I think the 720s is what the Macbook should be and the 730s is what the MBA should be.

What I find hilarious is we are at the point where a keyboard that is sold as an accessory by Microsoft is a lot better than a keyboard on a $1000 device made by Apple lol.

They will be doomed as long as Cook stays as CEO IMO.

Yeah, I prefer the typing experience on my Surface Pro type cover over the typing experience on my MBP. The type cover keypad also appears to be more durable/reliable and can be easily replaced if it fails.

I'm getting closer..

Now that I'm running a dual boot Hack again, I'm really digging in and tricking out my Win 10 install and I'm totally blown away with how much I'm *not* missing MacOS.

This is not good for Apple if even someone like me (basically exclusive MacOS use for 16 years) is finding "the other side" to be pretty damn "just fine and great actually"

I spent most of the last 2 days in Windows exclusively and it's just not an issue at all. Some things are different, but so much of what matters is on both sides and great on both sides (sides being "each OS")...

This is an interesting time for me. This year may be the year I actually go back. I'll be really curious to see what the future of the Mac looks like by the end of this calendar year.

I think Win10 is pretty good. My desktop is that. I just haven’t had time to really dig into the Unix subsystem to convince myself to sell my MBPs.

The only reason I’m still using the MBP is because of MacOS (specifically UX and Unix). I’d ditch Apple hardware today if Apple officially supported MacOS on PC hardware.

I switched to a XPS 15" last November after decades of Apple machines. It is 4K Touchscreen, 6-core, 32GB, 1TB SSD, GTX 1050 and cost $1,850 on sale. The best Apple sale I saw for comparable specs was $3,499+dongles. And...I often work in dusty environments so I was scared to death of the Mac's fragile keyboards.

The XPS has USB-C/Thunderbolt, USB-A, HDMI, fingerprint sensor and an SD Reader. I can't tell you how nice it is to walk up to a podium and not have to futz around with dongles before getting a projector to work. And the keyboard is excellent. And the 4K touchscreen is beautiful and useful. Since Apple completely ignored the performance desktop for many years, I previously built an i7 Hackintosh. It runs great and I can dual boot Win10 and iOS12. At this point, I run it in Win10 most of the time. I installed the Ubuntu subsystem in Win10 and it works great for Linux stuff.

The only thing I honestly miss is the great Preview App. It truly is a swiss army knife, and there's nothing like it in Win10. I use PDFElement 6 for editing and re-arranging PDFs and Seer for quick file previews. They work fine, but they're not nearly as polished as Preview. Other than that, Win10 is pretty nice looking and has been very reliable.

The very best to you with your XPS. I scratch my head a lot in disbelief that anybody would want to spend $1000 or more for a comparable Mac system with possible future issues plus the dongle life. Some say that MacOS is so much better and windows is a failure, but I have found it to be just fine. Maybe Windows was iffy awhile back, but it has improved. I personally am not willing to spend a lot more money for the Apple logo just because some are diehard fans of it. It’s a tool and I want a tool that works for me more often than not, and not spend more for it.

Almost 2 months now with my Lenovo system and Windows OS and not one complaint from me. ;)

I am done with Apple computers (apparently so are they!). Switched to a Windows laptop and had a Windows desktop already. Just bought the iPad mini though and will keep my iPhone. For mobiles devices, no one does it better than Apple IMO. And that's where their attention has been so the products are very good.

I am a soon-to-be X1 Extreme user. The terrible design of the current MacBook Pro and the inane arrogance of Ive have me fleeing the Mac platform.

Use what you want, but this kind of post just makes me scratch my head. So I will legitimately ask....why does the design of the hardware seem to matter more than the software when it comes to these kinds of discussions? Even if you've had keyboard issues on one of the recent laptops....they have a replacement program to alleviate that free of charge. I get that the hassle can be a pain, but more than completely changing the software platform you use?

Should've mentioned I have grown tired of macOS since Lion, and really annoyed by High Sierra/Mojave. I don't use iCloud or anything so I am not tied in.

I may return if the OS and hardware improve, but as of now I don't really have a whole lot of reason to stay.

Fair enough and that's more of a logical reason to make a shift.

To each his own though. Good thing for us all that there are options.

For me it, the beginning of the end was Mavericks. I feel like with that code base, they rolled out less and less features, and more and more bugs. Mojave's biggest feature is dark mode, and for me had the worst bugs. I know I was on a beta, but it totally destroyed my filesystem to such a degree, I had to recreate the fusion drive and reinstall macOS (I lost both windows and macos thanks to Mojave). I went back to 10.13 and I've not upgraded my iMac since.

Still, some things work better in macOS then Windows. For instance, I had a fair amount of headaches trying to import my photos from my iPhone into Lightroom on my X1E. The previews were all sideways, the ordering was all messed up. I have no idea. Using my iMac, no such issues, though going back to my laptop and importing them LR correctly alligned and sorted them after import. The problem is, I wanted to only grab the last set of images but with the ordering messed up I couldn't find them (and I did select the sort order on the preview pane).

I cleaned up my iPhone, imported everything so in the future this hopefully won't be an issue.

Lion ripped out a lot of the feel of OS X. With the crappy scrollbars and Launchpad they really tried to mesh it with iOS. Everything since Lion doesn't really feel like a desktop OS to me.
