basically I cannot find websites that sell camera gear and cameras in pound sterling.

a google search brings up a few but I don't know who I can trust.

All I can trust is Jessops, Currys, Amazon and Argos. There must be more.

I hear in the USA that there are loads of online stores but there seems to be a real shortage here in the UK. :(

have any of you guys bought from any sites other than the above mentioned?

+1 for warehouseexpress.com

I've recently used cameraworld, and not very impressed :

They don't provide tracking ( or at least I didn't see it )

Their payment ' sage pay' isn't particular good, it took me 2 attempts to make the payment go through.

I returned a parcel without signing for it as I was advised to by them as I didn't want it ( found it £50 cheaper elsewhere ). After waiting 10 days for a refund, and despite emailing them for a update, I had to contact them about what's going on and they said that they didn't contact epson ( and vise versa ) when the received my declined parcel.

I've used Warehouse Express, Park Cameras, Jacobs, Fixation, Jessops, Amazon and Calumet with no problems. Colleagues have used Grays a lot, and swear by their customer service.

http://www.camerapricebuster.com - price comparison site for UK camera gear, lists loads of stores (some are internet based only).

There are loads of stores in the UK, I hope the various replies on this thread are of help.

Another vote for warehouse express here also , however I have actually been really really impressed with SRS microsystems. I also tend to use Calumet for lighting gear due to convenience and the fact if anything goes wrong they have a counter I can walk back into for help .

Seeing as you are in Manchester, go have a look at Calumet Photo at Ardwick at the side of the Mancunian Way, calumetphoto.co.uk large showroom and good advice. They are a Global company so no worries

Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread, of semi relevance - has anyone had any experience with those mass camera gear sellers on eBay from Hong Kong, Vietnam, Canada etc?
(they seam to get good feedback)
Australian prices on camera gear are pretty bad atm.

I've used eBay for a couple of very low value bits and bobs (plastic flash brackets) and the items have arrived about 10 days later from Hong Kong well packaged. Never bought anything major from them myself, but friends and relatives in Australia have (for the same reason you mentioned) and have had no problems (that I know of).

I used to work for them when I was at school and university, although that was a few years ago. Small independent group of shops staffed by people who know what they're talking about. Always worth giving them a call even if you've found a cheaper price elsewhere - they'll usually do their best to meet or beat anyone else.

Gray's are good too and their new stuff is usually competitive, although their used stock is often vastly overpriced. Robert White (http://www.robertwhite.co.uk) doesn't seem to do as much as they used to but they are still excellent for larger format stuff.

I've found that Grays give excellent service and seem to know Nikon gear inside out. They sell secondhand Nikon gear too, and their grading is very conservative. They're not strictly an online store, as you have to place orders by phone/fax etc., but this is not a problem for me.

forgive me for being naive but what does that mean? "grey imports" ?

Means unofficial imports. Not always an issue, but I prefer to know in advance where my gear comes from. I have used foreign importers before, but at least I know in advance.

I've used Digital-Rev with no problems, quite a few people I know use onestop digital.
