Goodbye Santa Rosa hello Penryn!

Seems like Intel made some stunningly revolutionary discovery in material research lately, and since IBM announced that it is on the verge of making a similar discovery that technology must be so cutting edge that it bleeds. Unfortunately it won't be until Intel releases the new 45nm chips before we will see any of it, so now there is something to pine for after the upcoming Santa Rosa MBPs! 

Santa Rosa is a chipset, Penryn is a processor - they're two different things. Pretty sure Penryn will go into the Santa Rosa chipset when it's ready to ship.

Actually, Santa Rosa is a platform...Crestline is its associated chipset. And yes, I assume that Penryn-based processors will arrive on Santa Rosa.

The Montevina platform (with Cantiga chipset) that will be the next-generation platform for Penryn isn't coming until the first half of 2008.

Remember folks, Penryn need not require Montevina to run, just as Merom runs fine on Napa with its optimized Santa Rosa platform coming shortly. Intel still plans to release Penryn in 2007, while Montevina won't be out until 2008, possibly a few months into it.

Of course, Montevina will do for Penryn much the same thing that Santa Rosa will do for Merom- specifically, a FSB boost (1066MT/s), adding DDR3 800 RAM support, and an improved integrated graphics thingy.

This simply throws another wrench in the works- if Apple comes out with MBPs with Penryn before Montevina, I might be very very tempted.

Hmm... I still have an unopened Applecare box here which I will activate on the MBP that I am keeping beyond 1 year. Guess I will just sit on it and wait for the next revision to see if they spot the new mythical LED backlight LCDs and Robson caching flash booting

If Penryn is to be released in the Santa Rosa platform, will Merom ever see the light of day in the platform that was designed to support it. Also, if Penryn is put into Santa Rosa instead of Merom, what advantages will it have over Merom in that platform.

My understanding of the current short term roadmap is thus:

We'll see SR incorporating Merom initially. SR inc. Penryn will follow later in the year. Penryn will offer some faster clock speeds, larger L2 cache (3mb/6mb, depending on model, rather than the current 2mb/4mb) and a partial SSE4 implementation. Full SSE4 is for Nehalem, I believe.

Penryn should also be cooler and offer better battery life. I'd expect a MacBook/MBP refresh for SR/Merom circa June, and SR/Penryn circa November a la the C2D refresh of '06.

Montevina's over a year away -- too long for me. I thought I was doing pretty good hanging in there for Leopard!
