Goodreader and Downloader

I believe I mostly understand what Goodreader can do. I can view various documents and videos etc that are in locations such as MobileMe or Dropbox etc. I can send documents from Goodreader to other apps (like Pages) or send documents from other apps (like Mail) to Goodreader. Seems like a handy thing to have in order to store files on the iPad itself and view them.

Someone told me about Downloader as well, which allows you to browse websites and actually download files which is something Safari won't do (apart from being able to save images). Downloader also looks useful, but it isn't free. It's very cheap, so it will be worth it if I actually need it... but is it required if you have Goodreader?

What I'm asking: Can Goodreader browse websites and download files directly from the site like Downloader can? If so, I'll only need one of the apps, not both.

I originally planned to buy downloader, but goodreader does what I need and was only a dollar. yes, goodreader downloads files from the internet just like downloader. I don't use good reader's built in browser. I just find what I want in atomic, copy the URL and paste it in goodreader. If you use safari you can just add a "g" to the beginning of an URL and it will launch goodreader and start downloading the file automatically, that doesn't work in atomic though. The only thing goodreader lacks is .rar support. I'm hoping that gets added in the future.

Thanks for the info! That's really interesting about the "g" thing. Do you mean I can surf using Safari and when I come across something I want to download, I can just copy the URL into the address bar but add the G and Goodreader will automatically open and download the file? If so that would be excellent!

I know that recent updates mean that Goodreader can now document share between other apps as well. I don't think I"ll need .rar very often.

Yeah, I've only tried it once but it worked. Just add a g to the beginning of the URL "ghttp://..." or whatever the URL is. According to what I've read it may not work in all cases. If g doesn't work you can try gr or giw. I tested it with mediafire and the g worked. It really sucks that it can't unrar though. I'd hate to have to waste 3 bucks just to get that when goodreader does everything else I need.

United Reader has build-in downloader and it doesn't cost extra. also does most jobs that GR has.

Goodreader actually contains a little copy/paste bookmark address to make things easier to save. You create a link in your bookmarks in safari which, when pressed, automatically adds the 'g' to the start of the current address and downloads the file instantly without you having to edit the address yourself. Very handy!

As far as I understand, it costs money to license the RAR format for use.
That's probably why Goodreader doesn't have it and why Downloader costs $3.
