Google (+Apple) forces McTube to remove caching

Latest update says Google "requested" that they remove this feature. As we all know these "requests" are basically done at gunpoint: change the software or have Apple pull it from the App Store.

Google has been particularly anti-consumer as of late...
 
Just saw this as an update to the app.

I'm not going to update, (McTube recently got me through 2 flights and a holiday with very patchy internet) But I wonder if the restriction could be applied to old versions of the app?
 
I saw this update as well. As much as I love the cache feature, I decided to just go ahead and upgrade. I considered just not upgrading, but I decided that I REALLY wanted the future updates. When I opened the new version, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the cache was still there! Now I'm simply confused
 
Wow I'm debating to update as well. I love the cache feature I think I'll wait a little longer before I update mine.
 
I just came on to warn people of this, I'm never updating the app now- I'll also be saving a copy of the old IPA for future iOS devices or for when I need to reinstall iOS.

I'm reluctant to upgrade because I like the cached feature.

I panicked after I read it and had already clicked update all, opened it up and found that the 2 short films that I had cached were all still there and also that I could still go and cache other stuff on youtube, I'm not trolling, I like everyone else in this forum liked and used the feature (specifically as I have an hour commute into London everyday). I'm confused too but have a theory that because I had stuff cached already it left the feature intacted, this could of course be completely wrong but I wanted to vouch that I can still cached stuff off youtube. I opened this account after reading this forum, please don't give me a hard time if yours updates and you get a different result.

Can we hear from anyone else that has updated?
 
Disappointed, looked at updates this morning and was shocked to see the app I PAYED for for the CACHE feature. I will not update. This was available to jailbreakers before, and will be the cause of more jailbreaking. I do use it for music, remixes only on youtube and are free. So apple, I have been a supportive customer, but recently you have been to strict.
 
forgot to mention that i'm on the ipad and also I havent closed the app yet, its was open before updating and still is now, now i'm scared to close it

Man up , close it & delete it from the background

Then open the app again see if cache still works

not until I have watched everything in their, until then I'll live vicariously through someone else who has the balls to close it entirely
 
Cache is still there

I can confirm that the cache is still there with all videos that were previously cached. Furthermore I can still cache new videos. Still real nervous about the change ...
 
Ok I can confirm 100% cache still works after the update , even after removing the app from the background
 
can this update still run in the background? (e.g. video loaded with audio... press home button... 0.01 second silent, and audio plays again.)

I beg to differ a little with the above - I uninstalled 2.7 and installed updated 3.0 version. Cache is missing. Deleted 3.0 and then put back 2.7 - cache is back. I then upgrade to 3.0 with 2.7 installed and cache is still there. I think the message here is to backup your old version or lose the cache feature. I would also backup all other YouTube apps with cache since I'm sure that this 'feature' will be added to other apps in the near future.

Thanks I went ahead and just updated without uninstalling and got the cache feature! But as I suspected I wondered if I would uninstall and reinstall if I lose this feature. I'm glad you answered my question! Thanks!!

I hate to be defending Google here but I think the move stems primarily from content producer/copyright holder that are paid loyalty from ads viewed. Caching helps viewers see fewer/no ads. It costs Google money to host video and ditto for content producers.
 
How do I get the old version ipa to save for future use?
I already updated to the new version & I can't remember the last time I connected my phone to iTunes on the Mac
 
If you have a time machine backup the older version may be on one of your backups. Copy it to a safe place in case you need it later. Otherwise you are out of luck since the app is linked to your specific machine. (Unless you are jailbroken but that's another discussion)

Google can pound sand. On my home PC or Linux box I use Firefox with ad blockers and never see ads. Now my android tablet is a miserable experience with ads on every vid.

Plus I can download YouTube vids all day with FF plug-ins. They haven't stopped that. Too much control on mobile devices.
