As it says on the tin, starting a few weeks ago Google Chrome (75.0.3770.142) defaults to hide file extensions when downloading images. There is a "Hide Extension" tickbox at the lower left of the Save dialogue and it is on by default.
This happens only in Chrome. Safari also has this tickbox (so it's part of the Open/Save dialogue structure) but it is off by default (thankfully).
Been trying to research this for a while but could find no mention of it currently. Evidently in versions around 11 Chrome would act like the file extension was not there and added it on again. And lots of questions on how to show file extensions in Windows.
