I have been using Waze on Carplay since yesterday. You have to update the app, if you haven't yet.

Both apps have been recently updated to support CarPlay.

I have used both Google Maps and Waze in my car since they were updated to support CarPlay.

I used google maps and didn't like it so switched back to Apple maps - like Apple's look better and integration with calendar and frequent locations.
You have to update Google Maps and Waze to latest version for to appear on CarPlay

I hate how both of them hide the map on the iPhone when connected to CarPlay. It's more dangerous for me to look at the map on the CarPlay screen when I've got a iPhone holder on my windshield.
