Google Maps terribly slow on safari

I have an issue on my 2017 5k iMac, google maps is so slow in safari, that it's practically unusable.

However, using chrome it's silky smooth. I also tested on my old Mac mini outputting to HDTV and it's smooth. So the issue may be limited to Retina display?

Anyone else have this issue? This is my first retina Mac, so I have nothing to compare to.
