I dunno, somewhere in West Texas
Another new Google initiative has hit the Play store and this one comes in the form of an sms app. It looks like messenger detaches from hangouts and solely concentrates on sms which is a godsend because imo hangouts is a cluster****.

After using it briefly, I'm loving it. It's straightforward and to the point. Check it out on the play store

NICE!!!! It's replacing my default SMS asap.

I also hate Hangouts and hope Google just ditches it.

Ha ha I've also been waiting to ditch the stock SMS app. I hope this is one is a keeper because it looks and functions perfectly.

Can it send multiple photos in one mms?
Yep, my wife sent me a couple of pics of our 18 mth old daughter and they all showed up in one MMS.

The old Google messenger app was a pain as it would always bog down for seemingly no reason and take forever to send messages. It's been ages since they updated it so I'm glad they finally did. Looks and performs great and I was tired of hangouts.

I've been running this app for a few weeks now. It was available everywhere as an .apk to sideload. Came out when the Lollipop updated preview was released on mid October.

I LOVE this app, simple, clean and it just works. Seems an awful lot like Textra.

Does it have wake/pop up over the lock screen with quick reply ala Handcent?

Isnt it the same as in other people have to have this on their phone? Another burden if so unless one day Hangouts is gone and this replaces it and it sets up automatically.
Hangouts is fine EXCEPT...when i het a MMS, sometimes it shows up as a download i need to click a button to do it and it never works right away....and of course you can only send one.

a better place
Now if we can just get a replacement dialler/contacts app that fully replaces our existing (and throw in clock officially too) - with the aid of Google now launcher and all these stock apps we could turn almost any device into a stock Google experience.

I hear you. that's all that's left (apart from "settings" but we could live with that) to have an all native experience on any android device. I can see it happening some time but I just wish they would hurry up.

I thought it looked nice but the lack of configuration was too much of a negative for me to use it as my text app.

What configuration do you need from a text app?

Are you serious? Even the stock text app on my Note 4 has a heck of a lot more flexibility. Heck, just the notifications page within settings on the default Note 4 text app has more configuration options than this app has in its entirety. On just that one screen these are settings not on the google app:

Repeat message alert (never, every 2 minutes, every 10 minutes)
Pop-up display
Lock screen
Status bar (previews of message in status bar on/off)

There are more not on that one screen. And the note 4's messaging app's settings are anemic compared to Handcent and others.

looks a lot better than hangouts. It can get pretty messy with SMS merged for people who actually use google chat.

Yes, being serious. I don't have those requirements as I work differently.

All I need is the below basically. A simple app that I can use to text other people. Maybe with Lollipop and the lockscreen notifications it will be a bit better, but I get by just fine with this new app in it's current form.

I can see text resizing and color options maybe but not much really. The fact that it's lite and does the job is why I like it
