This is the first time I have seen this feature. Is this something new? The Panasonic TV search

Yes, it is a new feature of Google Now. You can let the phone listen to the show you are watching and it shows you information about that show.

Very cool but still US only at the moment. Grrr...

I have used it a couple of times so far, and there isn't really any use for it, other than gee-whiz factor. The TV show has to be live (not syndicated or playing via DVR/Roku/Netflix/etc) and provides only basic info. Example is below with the Letterman Show currently on:

yeah I noticed that too. It really is a waste since most people have a cable box that shows what you are watching. I guess in those rare situations where it says, "to be determined" the google now feature can help.

it does pick up on what you are watching really fast. It heard just background music and got the show in about 5 seconds.
