Hey ya'all

I've been playing with the Google Photos app on my iPhone 6 64gb over the last few days. I really like the app and all my photos (over 18gb) uploaded quickly and correctly.

Today I noticed that the app was taking up almost 2gb of space on my iPhone. When I checked again the app was taking up 3gb of space, and shortly after the app had taken up all the free space on the phone. Is this correct? I had to delete the app to get my free space back. Maybe I'm using the app incorrectly???

I want to keep a local copy of all my pics on the iPhone and just use Google Photos to upload my local pics to the Google cloud. is this possible? What am I doing wrong here???

Thank you in advance for any replies.

That space might be because Google photos keep cache of the smaller photos (preview). I have the same problem with Flickr. The only way I could clean the cache up was to delete and install the app again.
