Google Photos will end its free unlimited storage on June 1st, 2021

Nothing uploaded before then will count, but it’s still a bummer.

After five years of offering unlimited free photo backups at “high quality,” Google Photos will start charging for storage once more than 15 gigs on the account have been used. The change will happen on June 1st, 2021, and it comes with other Google Drive policy changes like counting Google Workspace documents and spreadsheets against the same cap. Google is also introducing a new policy of deleting data from inactive accounts that haven’t been logged in to for at least two years.

I do not use cloud services even as a back-up to my back-up. I do use DropBox, but it's exclusively for sharing photos or documents, in situations where I do not wish to attach them.

Having seen peoples Facebook and Twitter Accounts shut down for daring to disprove an official narrative, it is frighteningly obvious that back-ups of any description should not be in the total control of strangers.

Yep, now I will need to migrate everything over to iCloud Photo Library. 🙈
